Bass distortion pedals with TR-909 kick drum

Sign in to disble this ad
Found this on the web. It's a video showing what happens when you put a TR-909 kick sound through a bunch of distortion pedals. Thought this would be interesting because the pedals used are all pretty popular for our low frequency instrument too.

What’s the best distortion effect for great kick drum sounds?

One way to find out would be to obsessively test 13 distortion pedals with a Roland TR-909 drum machine – which is exactly what Gear Fiend Mitch Wells did.

He ran a TR-909 bass drum through these 13 effects pedals, some of which are straight ahead distortion effects and others that focus on fuzz, filtering and lo-fi distortion:

Dunlop Fuzz Face
Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff with Top Boost
Maxon OD-9
Boss OS-2
Boss DS-1
Boss DS-2
Pro Co RAT
Tech 21 VT Bass
MXR Bass D.I. +
Electro-Harmonix English Muff’n
Moog Moogerfooger Lowpass Filter
Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff Pi
Elektron SidStation

Not related to bass distortions specifically, but I have some drum loops processed through some of my VF-1 patches. It's pretty interesting stuff. In particular I've found that the percussion can sound great through fuzz, bitcrush, and specifically tuned drums with short decay can trigger the synth effect well. http://cgraham.com/chris/music/bass/vf-1/

yah. i don't do it as much now, since modern sample based synths are ridiculously good, but i used to run soft synth/drum machines through an OD or amp and mic it to get a more real/angry/full sound.

good stuff.
