Bass effect on Turn To Stone by Joe Walsh?

Sign in to disble this ad
Would a Big Muff Pi be the right effect to emulate the sound of the bass on Turn To Stone by Joe Walsh?

What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Sounds like a cranked Ampeg stack to me! I'll bet the Catalinbread SFT would be great for that.

Yep...and then add a touch of phaser.

I tried emulating this sound with a SansAmp BDDI but no luck. Is there a solution with this pedal before I look into the Catalinabread SFT?

Thanks

It is more likely a mildly cranked Ampeg B-15, those amps have a certain warmth that SVT never had.

In my opinion no, the Sansamp won't do it. Depending on the output of your bass it may not saturate enough (the BDDI and Programmable never did for me), nor do they have the necessary warmth or mids (not even with the bass and treble turned down). And the presence control, don't even get me started, icepick highs even at minimum, certainly not warm. I never found the Sansamps very Ampeg-like at all to be honest, and as it seems neither did you.

But getting that tone would be a breeze with the SFT. Just push up the gain and treble.

So this one in the Youtube seems to be the earlier recording, the one from a demo. This is the version taht plays in the movie Lords Or Dogtown. I like this version better than the album version, from 1975.

This is the version I am playing in a power trio, therefore I have to make enough noise to cover the rhythm as well.

It is true that the album version has lots of phaser.

Now, I am a bit on a budget for this: I saw a US Big Muff Pi for $49 at GC. Do you think I can something approaching/

I already have a Phase 90, my Stronglehold pedal

Well, to be honest you're not going to get that grind or the mids with a muff, unless you go boutique and try the Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B. But really I'd really try to swing the SFT, I think you'll find that one to be spot on.

The Muff is not the right tool for the job.

Fired up the pedalboard today and played through my SFT with a Earthquaker Grand Orbiter Phase. I think I got VERY close to what is going on with that bass track.
