For Funk, Jazz, and Black Gospel music styles, what pedals could you recommend to add to my rig. I currently have none.

I'd add a good chorus pedal, an envelope filter, footswitchable EQ of some sort, and a boost pedal for solos.

BTW the Fulltone Fat Boost works really well for bass.

Compression? Surely that's the first pedal?

Check here: Compressor Reviews

I ended up with an EBS compressor.

Amazing improvement to my sound! Try one out and see what you think.

For straight ahead jazz, pretty much none. For Funk and urban gospel an envelop filter is always fun and in combination with an octaver and/or gated fuzz you can gt some cool sounds. Pretty much the three main components of a synth. That's the idea that I created my board around. For the particular styles you mentioned, I'd say anything else is secondary (echo, chorus, reverb, etc.) as far as effects go.

In addition to what was mentioned before, I'd ad a Flanger, which was often used on funk bass, specially in the 70's (Stanley Clarke had a built-in flanger on one his basses he used with Return to Forever).
