bass effects help?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok. I'm new to these forums. I've posted the same questions on a couple guitar forums that have subforums for bass, but nobody ever answers.

I'm wondering if any of you know of any bass EQ pedals that I can use. I don't like boss stuff at all. I currently play either a Spector Euro 4LX or a modified MIM Fender Jazz Bass through an Aguilar Agro Overdrive into an Ashdown MAG 300 4x10 combo, DI'd out to the board (a 16 channel peavey with SP112 and SP series 18" subs as mains). I play in a band that does everything from Johnny Cash and Chuck Berry to Slayer and Megadeth and nearly everything in between.

Also can anybody reccommend a quality bass compressor, somewhere to find a big muff for bass (the black sovtek is out of production ), and can anybody tell me what kind of filter effects Chris Wolstenholme from Muse uses during live shows?

Wow. Literally all of those questions could be answered with 'do a search', but we'll let you off 'cos you only just joined.

Here's the deal on EQ pedals: there is an MXR you could try, but the Boss bass EQ really is worth a try. It does the job it's meant to very well; don't dismiss it just because of the brand.

Other effects; for fuzz, look up the EHX Bass Big Muff. I don't like it personally, but a lot of people love it here.

A good compressor, there's the BBE Opto-Stomp if you're on a budget, or the EBS Multicomp if you have a bit more cash.

As for filter/synth, Chris uses a lot of different expensive, rare and ultra-rare gear. For a versatile, cheap, does-the-job-for-live synth/filter, you won't get much better than the Digitech Bass Synth Wah. If you want to go a bit more versatile or spend a bit more money, try the Markbass Supersynth or the EHX Bass Microsynth. If you really want to spend crazy money and *sound like Chris* you could look into buying an Akai Deep Impact.

There's a TON of different EQ pedals out there that you could try. The main question is, do you want graphic, parametirc, or both? Also, why do you need an EQ? Amp EQ not cutting it, or you want to cop certain tones?

If you're looking for a compressor, look no further than http://www.ovnilab.com/
there are major major major reviews of compressors on bass done by fellow forumite Bongomania.

As far as effects that Wolstenholme uses... I am 100% sure that if you even just looked back 1-2 pages there would be at minimum 5 threads about just what you have asked.

As far as bass fuzz, if you're looking for a muff type fuzz unit for bass, look up the Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B, the Way Huge Swollen Pickle, the Blackout Effectors Musket, the Earthbound Audio Supercollider (you can only find em used nowadays), or a black russian muff on the used market. If you're looking for something other than a muff, take a look at http://bassfuzz.com/
which has major major major reviews of various bass fuzzes and other things done by one of the forum moderators, Grygrx.

Well, for EQ, I don't really have a preference as to graphic of parametric. My amp has a built in EQ section, but I really don't like having to run to the back of the stage to make alterations, Its impossible to keep the knobs where I want them from gig to gig (even though there are only 5 knobs) and I don't think it works as well as it could.

Compressors, I need something that will help me sound tighter across the full range to be honest. I feel like when we play quieter or down tempo type stuff that I'm not getting the attack that I like. I've seen videos of the EBS Multicomp and Aguilar TLC and a few others but I can't really tell the difference in them and nobody around here carries those brands.

I actually used to own a Swollen Pickle reissue, but I got rid of it because it was just way too damn loud gor any kind of practical use with either guitar or bass. I have looked at the Pickle Pie B as well and its still a possibility. I'd still really like a used sovtek black box, but I hate that there's idiots on ebay charging $100 a piece for them when they went new a year ago for $59.99.

As for synths, $1000 for a Deep impact seems ridiculous since none of my current repertoire calls for the use of a synthesized bass. They should probably look into reissueing that pedal if demand has driven the price up to that point. $250-$300 for a Micro Synth could be doable though.
