Bass Fuzz Help - Pickle Pie vs Pharoah

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have a Depth Charge and a Pickle Pie B as my Dirt.

I am sending back my El Oso Bass Distortion, so I could get the Pharoah with the store credit.

I heard thru the pipeline that the Pharoah is a muff derivative, and the Pickle Pie is obviously a swollen pickle which is derived from the Muff as well.

Am I covering the same sonic territories with both the Pickle Pie and the Pharoah?

Also, is the lack of blend going to be a problem with the Pharoah. Any help is greatly appreciated. I know its a new pedal but it seems good, and I heard some great demos.

I can't help you with the comparison, but I noticed you're keeping fuzz pedals and are looking for another fuzz, while El Oso looks like could do OD/distortion. Any specific reason you're returning the El Oso? It looked like a cool pedal and I was interested in it, especially because it has a blend knob, so I was wondering what you didn't like about it.

well,i have found i like my od/ dists on the fuzzy side, I run the PPB with a low gain fuzz setting (not that there is one... w/ clean blend in about 50% or so), and I run the DC full bore gain with ~25% clean blended in. That way I have a low gain and high gain fuzz on my board with varying amounts of clean blended. I am into Mastodon Troy Sanders type fuzz tones, but I also like The Rentals / Weezer / Jawbreaker type bass fuzzes. So as you can see I clearly don't know what I want or know what I am talking about . Typical pedal waffler!!!

The El Oso was cool, and I will likely try it for one more day or so but, it reminded me of the XXL and it was hard to get a good setting out of it. Its not bad, and as far as Distortions go it wasn't flabby. I guess I didnt like its voicing.

Well the bands you named are all muff bands and both the ppb and pharaoh are muffs. They will cover some similar sonic territory, but will also cover very different territories. As long as you run them differently, you'll be cool with both.

"Let me worry about BLANK!"

Well thats sort or what I figured, but coming from you it validates my theory.

I will likely pass on the pharoah then, I ll give the El Oso another chance and then if it doesnt make then Ill just have two dirts. Although I really want a Rat Tail !!!!! (maybe with a custom bone-itis graphic!!!) LMK
