Bass FX 101

This forum is pretty interesting and I`m getting sort of an education on bass guitar effects. Most likely I will never have call to use any type of effect or signal modification in my playing.There really is a definate "fun" or "coolness" factor about having and using effects IMHO.

Simple explanations to some common terms would be helpful.

Flanger -

Overdrive -

Chorus -

Phase -

Fuzz - (have an idea)

Distortion - (pretty sure)

Compression -

Delay - (got it!)

Gate or Smart Gate -

Presence - (describes a sound/tone?)

Clean & Dirty, Wet & Dry - (descriptives of sound/tone?)

Gain - (the signal`s strength before affected by amp settings?)

Clipping - (from running amp/cab above watt rating?)

Super Comp - (MXR comp=compression?)

Tremolo - (vibrating or fast pitch changes in a sound?)

When I read descriptions of various FX on co. sites I`m lost.

Only my 2x of GAS for bss FX. I`ve been researching that Tech 21 Sansamp VT Bass unit.Do you think those nice sounds are just on youtube or can it perform in the real world?
