I'm looking for a bass multi-fx unit/preamp similar to the rackmount Bass POD Pro. I'm looking for something that will change my bass tones from 1 to another(i.e. grindy G&L to a dub/reggae sound) I don't think they make'em anymore since the X3 unit. And with everyone's experiences, would I just be better off going the pedal route?

any and every bass multi effect pedal on the market will pretty much do that.

OK. Any preferences on using one as a preamp?

most versatile is probably the Line6 Bass Pod XT Live as I've heard of plenty of people feeding this straight to a power amp or FOH. Zoom B2 is favored amongst here as far as tone shaping multi's go. Korg AX3000B doesn't get as much love but is also said to be good. Search is your friend.
