Bass Pedal-Effects info. needed, PLEASE

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, I'm new to the group & a (Beginner) fellow Bassist. I wish to play music by "The Cure" and I've been using tabs that I've printed online.

I have read about the different effects pedals that are used by "The Cure's" bassist, Simon Gallup. I am not familiar with the different sounds/effects for each type of pedal (i.e., Chorus, Compressor, Distortion, Wah-Wah, etc...) and I'd like to know if there's just one pedal-effect that can give me a clear, simple sound for practice & playing in a band.

Please keep in mind that I'm just a beginner, and not too creative (yet) with playing. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

William

Have a look at the various Boss multi-effects units - like the ME-50B. They cover most bases and will give you a feel for different types of effects including those you mention.

A "clear, simple sound" suggests a clean tone to me. Sounds like you don't need many effects, if any at all.

OK...well I thank you both for your help. I'll look into the multi-effects units. I've seen a few online, seems like this is the route to go.

grab a zoom b2 or some cheap bass-specific multifx, it'll give you a greater awareness for what each different effect sounds like.

for the Cure, you probably couldnt go wrong with a chorus pedal. so then you can sound like 80% of 80s bands (especially Simon Gallup and Hooky from New Order/Joy Division)

Chorus and maybe a touch of overdrive from something like a Voodoo Sparkle Drive would be about all needed for the Cure.

I believe what you're looking for is a chorus pedal. the danelectro fab chorus would be a good choice. it's a lush-sounding chorus pedal that costs 15 dollars. or if you have the cash for it, the electro-harmonix clone theory chorus pedal would be another good choice. mysticboo has sound sample of that pedal on bass on his soundclick website.

Thanks everyone! I've been researching all the suggestions by listening to YouTube postings of other Bassists. I'd like to get that Danelectro Fab Chorus Pedal for starters, then get a Multi-Effects system later on. This is a great website & forum....glad I found it.

I think you'd be better off with a flanger for Cure stuff. Maybe look at the EHX Stereo Electric Mistress - it's fairly cheap, widely available, and does chorus and flanging effects. Or the EHX Polychorus.

Although I think Gallup probably used Boss effects.

FYI - Simon Gallup's pedalboard (pulled from the "Pedal Boards of the Stars: Part One") thread...

Yup, Simon (and all of the Cure) are seemingly Boss only guys.

It seems if you have a question relating to Simon, this is the place to ask: All Experts

Simon is great - A very underrated bass player.

I think he uses: TU-2, MT-2, DD-3, BF-2, CE-5, NS-2 and a DI.

If you can get those, you'll have everything you need to sound like Simon. His tone is alot to do with his bass which is usually a Gibson Thunderbird.

Thanks! I looked "Simon Gallup" up on Wikipedia & his gear is listed on there. I'm trying to understand the different types of sounds/effects and how they are used in songs. I'm gonna get a Danelectro Fab Chorus for $14.95 to start off with this week. After a few months of learning/playing, I'll graduate to a M.E. System (BOSS ?).

I'm not planning on becoming a Bass Virtuoso, I just want to be good enough to play (Cure covers) at parties & weddings.

I think you'll have no regets owning a denelectro chorus pedal. danelectro makes one of the best affordable chorus pedals ever design. if you're interested in multi-effects processors, I would recommend the korg 'toneworks' ax3000b. it has a large variety of effects, amps and cab models at an affordable price.
