| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jan 2003 Location: Northern California | | | Was considering getting the Roland PK-5A midi pedals for an older progressive tribute that may be forming (my side project). I have NO KNOWLEDGE what I would need and the only use I would probably have is for rudimentary layering. I like the idea of having a laptop rather than a keyboard (for now) but what would I need to get started? any sort of interface for the laptop to pedals? Any favorite software programs that can do justice to the Moog Taurus sound? Would I want to put up the cash for the Moog Taurus 3 pedals instead? Any differences between the PK-5A and the PK-5? Any other suggestions like a synth module (Dave Smith, Slim Phatty, other rack unit, etc...).
Thanks!!

I use them to play monophonic parts (string synths, bass synths, etc.). They can also be used to trigger sampled synth pads, guitar parts, organ parts, string parts, and vocal lines/harmonies.
I made a fun little video which demonstrates this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phov99cGp_8&sns=em
Someday, I'll probably trade up to a set of Roland pedals, but this setup works fine for now.
Who needs keyboard players, anyway? LOL

I tried to use the basyn MIDI adapter, but it didn't work and the guy who sells them does not provide any support after the purchase, so right now, I'm kinda in limbo. If I ever get this setup together, it'll not only be a MIDI trigger, but the enclosure will also be designed to accommodate my stomps.
I recently missed out on a nice set of Roland PK-5s in my local CL, so I'll have to keep looking or wait until another MIDI adapter becomes available.

I just got back into playing and there was no way I was spending the kind of money people are asking for those things these days. I bought mine for around $500 about 15 years ago. They were awesome!
Now I'm playing a set of PK-5's triggering a Roland SH-32 table top synth. That Roland is a BEAST! Small little synth, but massive sounds I have a perfect Moog Taurus patch that I programmed along with a Tom Sawyer sweep that sounds just like Geddy's original Oberheim. Picked up the SH-32 for $175 locally and the PK-5s for around $225. More reliable than my old T1s also for live use, they could be a little finicky sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have another set of Taurus pedals, but this is a great alternative with more options (arpegiators, more sounds, sound effects, etc.)
I'll snap some pics at my next rehearsal in a few weeks and post it up. |

Thanks!! | As far as the difference between the pk-5 and pk-5a, this is the answer I got from Roland... "The main difference is that the PK-5A meets the new RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) requirement which went into effect in the Europe marketplace during 2003/2004.
Other than that, the specs are the same."

I just unpacked the pedals (sheepishly admit they've been in the box for a bit due to life, work, etc.).
Any suggestions on how to get started (you can't be too basic). This is totally new territory for me.
My goal is to use the pedals while I play bass to add keyboards to an original project I'm working on. Down the road, perhaps it expands to more keys, using them as bass pedals, etc. However, my first goal is to be able to trigger some nice keys when needed.
Thanks for the tips, tricks, etc.!

Congrats on the gear! As far as getting started, I usually play the same root note on my pedals as I'm playing on the bass. With practice, you can noodle around more on the bass while hitting those notes on the pedals. |

I meant actually hooking the things up and programming sounds, etc. That is how newbie I am!!!

As long as you understand that all the pedals do is transmit an on/off signal to your sound module, you'll be okay. No actual sounds are sent through midi cables, only on/off signals. So you hook the midi cable to your midi out on your pk-5 and send that to the midi in of your sound module. The only thing you need to make sure is that the Roland is set up to receive on the same channel as your sending from the pedals. I don't remember the default channels on the pedals, but the bass/poly modes are different. Your Roland is most likely set up to receive on channel 1, so set your midi out channels on your pedals to channel 1 (midi program-->low c pedal).
Start jamming! |
