bass pedalboard for drone music?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everybody! I play in a drone band. 2 guitars and 1 bass (that's me). Something like Earth or Sunn O))) (without metal influences).

What kind of pedals do you recommend (type/model)? I have a Precision (copy) bass and a Zvex Fuzz Factory.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I did some drone music for a while and got great results from the Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard, Malekko B:Assmaster, Colorsound Tonebender, Foxx Fuzz/Wah, and Boss RV-3. The key is ambience, and boatloads of sustain!

You can't have enough delays imho, but how about an Ebow?

I've tried an Ebow but it's not strong enough for my flatwound strings. )

I suggest getting one of the boss delays, DD-3 or DD-6, with the hold function.

Then you can have a solid drone note underneath leaving you room to add to the ambiance with your other effects.

How do you mean "without metal influences"? Sunn 0))) and Earth are the heaviest metal bands ever.

In your situation I would want fuzz, a sub-octave, delay and a looper, maybe with a feedback loop in there. You've got fuzz covered, so I would suggest you get a Whammy IV or PS-5, and one or two DD-6s. One for regular delay, one for 'warp' mode and some looping.

Ebow works plenty well with my flatwounds

i'd suggest a decent volume pedal. nice to have in between the fuzz and delay.

all of the above,

and more

I play in an improvisation project, and sometimes we venture into drone territory, and I use what people described above. But the following come in very handy in those moments as well:

chorus (ambiance!!!)
different kinds of overdrives and fuzz,
tremolo,
phaser.

sub octave
delays with long times
volume pedal
a looper or two would also help

Put any distortions AFTER your delay.

I'm pretty interested in this thread. I'm starting a drone folk styled solo project and I'd really like to see what other people are using.

I started a thread similar to this quite a while ago, and got some good answers, similar to those here (I just haven't really put them to the test yet...). Multiple delay pedals, with hold- or looping capabilities are probably worth looking into. Also, a reverb with long decay should be a good investment, as well as one that does reverse reverb. Actually, I think one of those might be more usable than a delay, or at least less choppy.

A feedback loop can be effective too, and I'm quite fond of my Line6 Dr. Distorto, which has a built in feedback circuit that I employ often when I'm in an experimental, sustain-y, mood.

What exactly does a feedback loop do? Sorry to be off-topic but I really wanna know.

Delay is a must. Fuzz can be a good addition, both a manual wah and auto-wah work well, especially in conjuncture. Tremolo, Whammy could also be used.
