Bass PodXT Noise

Sign in to disble this ad
I played a gig on Thursday and used my Bass PodXT into the house bass amp as a monitor and out to the desk for FOH.

The Noise was SO LOUD that I had to turn the volume on the bass amp down to a level where i couldn't hear it and had to play by memory (which is fine, but not comfortable).

Has anyone had similar problems? Is this something that is common of Line6 products?

I am so annoyed that I am considering getting rid of it.

Any suggestions on what could replace it and be reliable?

Thanks

Paddy

So have you used the Line6 before in this configuration? Did you have problems with it then? Was the noise going FOH or just to the house amp you were monitoring? Where the cables you used OK? Did you swap cables? Was it near any stuff that causes RF interference such as fluorescent lights? Was the house bass amp clean when you plugged the bass into that? Did you check for ground loops on the house bass amp?
Was the Pod clean through headphones? Does the Pod work as expected now?

There's a lot of stuff to check out before throwing what might be an innocent device away

I know that one of the pros of using a POD is to be able to bring nothing but a gig bag to the gig, but I would not rely 100% on the house's gear -- Even though it *should* work.

Had you brought your own amp or powered speaker to take care of your needs you could have cared less was going on with the house equipment.

I have a POD XT which I don't use live, I just have it for practice and I have dabbled a little bit with bringing it to practice and plugging in to our PA. It's always been very quiet. I use a TRS to XLR cable and use the model output.

My guess is there's nothing wrong with your POD. There was something wrong with the house equipment, which resulted in you having a tough gig.

Live and learn, I'm always leery of relying on house gear / other people's gear.

If the noise was just coming from the amp (which it seems like from your post): Were you running into the power section of it, or did you plug your POD into the instrument input?

It just sounds to me like you may have been running the POD into the pre-amp and clipping it. Badly.

I ran into the effects return so bypassed the preamp. The amp seemed to be fine without the pod.

The chain was bass-pod-DI-signal 1 to the amp
-signal 2 to the FOH. I'm not 100% sure of this. It has never made a noise in my house but then in 2 different places, the gig and a rehearsal space it has been noisey.
I normally don't like playing through other peoples gear but that was the easiest way of doing it this time. Maybe it was something else other than the POD but either way was very annoying.

If it was the POD is there something I could put in the chain after it to reduce or eliminate the noise?

What kind of nosie was it? More 60hz humm or a higher pitch. The reason why I ask is my Bass PODxt live is silent except when I use the tuner. Then I get a whine at about 2 or 3 Khz. I'm wondering if you are getting that whine all the time.

Line 6 has a forum for the Bass POD series. maybe post your question up there.

i don't know how to describe it other than a loud hiss or hum. Not the 60 cycle that i have experienced with jazz basses.

Other than that night the POD is generally a good piece of equipment but i have noticed that I have 1 or 2 settings that i now use and thats it lol

HEY Paddy:

Maybe try one the EHX Hum Debugger Pedals? I hear they can remove ANY kind of noise though I have not tried one....
