I use a little reverb on EUB for a some help into a more upright sound in jazz trio.

The fact that I don't like the effect unit in the video in the first post led me to ask people what this kind of effect is for. What is its purpose? I don't believe that this is an invalid question at all.
It sounds like something I'd use with my telecaster, not my precision. | You have been writing stuff like who the hell uses reverb on bass? & implied it is a good way to get kicked out of a band, so your tone doesn't come across as "Just asking a question guys" but more like knocking people that are creative enough to use reverb in a way that meets THEIR needs, not yours. So you sir are the snide one, I simply boiled down your remarks in this asinine thread to save everybody else the time and effort of posting here. |

I'm not interested in bringing people down. I didn't start this thread to cause a ruckus. I requested you to not be snide and to contribute something. But instead you've come back at me again suggesting that I'm perpetrating some underhanded attempt to stifle the creative element of anyone who wants to use this effect. Don't try and twist my words. You'll find that it won't be particularly rewarding.
I'll reiterate what I said in post number one. I don't like what I hear in that video, most especially towards the end. I want to know why people might want such an effect on bass. I want to know why Ashdown might have chosen to invest in it. Many people have so far indicated what I already know: that a little bit of reverb can be helpful in certain circumstances, especially in a fretless environment. Additionally certain posters have come out and presented really cool applications of reverb effects (ie. that Isis stuff which I especially liked) the like of which I haven't heard previous to this; therefore advancing the thread and the conversation.
You're most welcome to come the libertarian with me (ie. each to their own) and call me out as some form of closet troll, and others are welcome to agree with you, but I'd vastly prefer it if you actually had something further to add to the discussion. If you consider the content to be asinine you are most welcome not to respond.

I think I'd use it more than I slap. Funny thing is, I have a great reverb pedal on my guitar rig, just never thought to try it on my bass rig. Come to think of it I also have a killer H&K Rotosphere (Leslie emulator) for my guitar maybe I'll try that an the bass also. . |

At some point I'd like to add a Polytope, but for the moment the Nimbus is working really well on its own. It can provide a lush but tasteful new-agey sound, or, coupled with my Octamizer, a synthy/deep/ambient sound. If you're playing rock, no, you probably don't need reverb, but if you're trying to do something outside of the usual boxes, it can be very useful.

There's lots of flexibility in all the settings with the potential to get some really wild stuff going on that I'll probably never use - but mostly, I've just left it set to the "Ambiance" option and enjoyed how this very subtle setting makes things sound just a little bit more "alive" and gives it a sort of studio-magical touch. A little goes a long way.

| | | | Is a matter of taste and opportunities.
I do solo concerts, for which the reverber is a fundamental tool, obviously when I play in other contexts may not be useful.
But ... reverb is nice for me, and I find it a waste of time to polemics against a pedal!
Anyway my favorite is good ol 'Boss RV-2, n° one among the ones I've had in the past, including the rare DOD fx 45, one of the few analog reverbs, and a lot of modern stompboxes. |

Reverb is a way of simulating space when there isn't naturally any.

Brian Cook's usage of reverb is haunting... in a good way

| | | | I'm a blues player and I rarely kick my reverb off, if at all. I like the vintage tube/spring units, but I take a Boss FRV-1 out with me. Adds another dimension of expression to the sound, being that it's such a dynamic effect. I really like it. From a little glow to spaced out psychedelic drones it's a really cool and overlooked effect for bass. And I'm not much of an effects user. The only other thing I tend to use is some fuzz sometimes. Running fuzz into reverb, now that's something. Total crazy Iron Butterfly territory. |

Lately I've been experimenting with a compressor set up with a side chain from my straight signal to pull the verb back when I'm actively playing which makes for a bit better punch, but not quite as natural sounding as just a decent bit of predelay...
The other way we've been using reverb is on the whole band through the FOH so that even in a small bar it sounds like a wonderfully lush space.
Reverb as an effect, however, is better left for guitars

If he doesn't chime in here, YouTube some of his stuff and he'll show you how to use a reverb with a bass. | In fairness, that's not bass playing; it is solo playing on a full range instrument. It is more chapman stick than anything else. And those players use lots of effects, with reverb being common in order to help fill out the space.
Awesome playing by baudin, of course.
