bass stomp boxes!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey I play in a metal band (yeah I know the joke). Anyway I play mostly with a clean bass tone, and was looking to possibly begin experimenting with some pedals. I'm not sure what I'm looking for when it comes to effects pedals. Looking to go from clean to that 80's style thrash (Kreator, Megadeth) bass sound for one or two songs.

Any other suggestions for bass effects stomp boxes are also appreciated.

the more space your music has, the more you can mess with the chorus and phaser stuff.

other than that, overdrive pedals are redundant if you have a good amp (if you dont have a good amp, its hard to go wrong with the sansamp stuff) ... just avoid fuzz, cause that will get you lost in the mix.

if you have solo spots, you can go crazy with a wah pedal.

that's about it for metal and effects pedals i guess...

if fuzz gets lost in the mix why do some people have 5 pedals on their boards? And how are overdrive pedals redundant if you have a good amp? I find it using a wah pedal gets lost in the mix because it cut the mids.

MXR Blowtorch overdrive or some other drive with a clean blend (IMO)

as for IncX, he thinks that a good amp will have enough grit to the tone that you don't need an overdrive. however, i think layered drives can sound pretty awesome.
and yes, i do have a good amp. (Orange Terror Bass)

I play metal as well, and I'm a big fan of the Tube Screamer. You already play clean, and the TS9B has a wet dry mix control that would let you see how much effect you want to add to your sound. A lot of for bass effects have that feature.

+1 for overdrive, even WITH a good amp. And, +1 for fuzz, for without fuzz, there would be no fuzziness.

I think a SansAmp (or similar) is probably the single best thing you can add to your sound--unless you have a very tubey-sounding, vintage behemoth of an amp to begin with. And possibly even if you do have one of those. It'll give you that "electric sizzle" you hear on so many recordings. Like you put your bass under the broiler for a few minutes. Even if you never turn it up far enough to qualify as "distortion" (let alone "fuzz"), it'll bring your sound to life. Your bass won't' sound like rubber bands. It'll start to sound like it feels to lick an 9-volt battery.

If you're new to effects, a multi-effects processor would be an easy solution to find what kind of sounds you're looking for. there are plenty of decent multi-effects processors out there. I have a couple of sound samples of multi-effects processors on my soundclick website. here's the link.

I currently run what is in my signature. Bass to Pre amp to Compressor to Head.

I would do that, but I want to preserve the ability to use my preamp as a DI. That's why i'm gonna go compressor > preamp(DI)> amp.

Compressor to make you sit good in the mix.

I grew up listening to 80's metal. I think you are already on the right track man. Here is what Greg from Testament uses.
Cliff used a rat I think. But that big spank metal tone is all about compression.
If you go fuzz, and there are some great bass fuzz pedals out there, you may want to find a way to blend in your clean tone so the bottom does not wash out in the mix.

Testament - Greg Christian Bass Rig Gear and Equipment

BTW, just a side note. Love the testament. Such a killer band. Greg rules!
