BBE Opto Stomp between Preamp and Power Amp???

Sign in to disble this ad
I suppose the answer will be "Try it yourself and see, jackass!!!', but here goes...

I have a BBE Opto Stomp on my board which I have been very happy with. I use it for subtle transparent compression just to even things out a bit.

I was thinking that if it would work just as well in between the Pre and Power amps of my SVT-VR (which doesn't have an "Effects Loop" per se) that would be one less pedal on my board. I tried a Demeter Compulator there once and it seemed to work fine, but I didn't really give it a good try and I was still very new to compression and not sure how to get the most out of it.

Just wondering if anyone had any advice, and/or thoughts on what to expect.....?????

Thanks,

-John

My guess would be that the output of the preamp might be a bit much for the Comp seeing as (AFAIK) it was designed for instrument level input. Wouldn't hurt to try it though!

Thanks! I'm hoping that if that's an issue that the -15dB switch might do the trick...

I'd put the Comp between the bass and the preamp... myself...

I have been, and it works, just thinking this might also work, and help streamline my pedalboard...I guess we'll see...

Ah! NO!!!

Pre to amp is the standard for a strong clean signal.

I tried my (opto-stomp) in the amps effects loop thinking it might work better. It didn't. In fact when the amp hit the built in limiter at higher volumes, something made really bad noises. Thankfully no damage was done. I utilize one consistently in the instrument to amp chain. I wouldn't highly recommend it for studio use, you can hear it gradually stepping off. However there's a big difference between studio and stage, where reliability is paramount. That being said it still functions satisfactorily and does not color the tone of your instrument.

Aside from freeing up some real estate on your pedal board, what would be the benefit?

Just looking to streamline the pedalboard. That's all.

In that case, you may as well leave it where it is in the signal chain and just velcro the sucker to the top of your head

Actually, that is a very good idea (though I'd probably zip-tie it to the back rather than velcro on top). I used to have it pretty early in my chain, but moved it recently to the end, so it's really just a matter of moving some cables around...I REALLY should have thought of that as an option myself.....stupid.....

THANKS!!!

Not that this really needed an 'update', but I did move the BBE off my board and put it on the top of my amp (but still in the same 'last' spot in my signal chain) at our last rehearsal and it worked out great.....sometimes we need someone to point out the obvious.....Thanks, PSPookie!!!!!

Just for your information - Instrument level is around 1/100 >1/10 volts, and preamp > amp line level is normally 1 Volt.

You could attenuate the input with the -15 switch, but you can't increase the output back to the correct level.
