BDDI problem: removing PCB

Sign in to disble this ad
I just cancelled a for sale thread for my BDDI because I discovered something rattling inside. I started opening up the unit to see what was up, and found that the pot shaft for the drive knob had been broken and repaired (I'm not the original owner). The rattling bit is contained behind the PCB in the same corner as the drive pot. Everything works 100%, but I'm assuming Tech 21 doesn't put "extra" parts in their pedals.

It looks like the only way to remove the board is to desolder the output jack to free up that side, so it will lift out. I'm not totally savvy with my 25 watt soldering iron, and there are 8 contact points to free up, simultaneously...

There's no easy way to do this, is there?

I'll probably cut my losses and sell it marked down to an informed buyer rather than risk destroying the thing, but I'm dying to see what the offending particle is, too.

With the nuts off the pots and the jacks you still can't tilt the board enough to free the jacks from the holes in the case??

Not unless there's a special secret trick to it. The edges of the board go right up to the inside walls of the box, leaving no wiggle room to slide over and let the jacks come out.

Pic for boredom:

Oh, crap!
I was thinking of the programmable model... so I'm a dumb ass.

It's still hard to believe they would design a pedal in such a manner. Install the jacks and then solder the board to them?

Yeah, I ran into that, too. I was told that they do it to stave off would-be cloners. You have to desolder the jack to get the board out......there is no easy way. Sorry.

Well...hell. I have an old dead amp head I can practice on, if I decide to go that route, I guess.

Thanks, guys.

This is why I really hate a lot of the new pedals. They are so damn cramped fixing it is a major pain in the ass. Kinda reminds me of car engines in the same manor....

You might be able to use a solder wick to remove enough solder from the eyelet.

Why is there one cap on the solder side of the PCB?

I repaired a similar unit a while ago. Unfortunately, the only way to disassemble the unit was to de-solder the 9V connector and the IN jack.

A real pain but I cound't find any other way - sorry.

Ah just get in there with your iron and a solder sucker! Just make sure your iron's not too hot.
