Behringer Racks: hiss with leds !?!?!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!
I'm trying to use a composer pro and an ultragraph and I hear (with headphones) that there's a sort of hiss in the same time that yellow leds go on or off... in both different rack units!!!
any other people can hear it???

i'm thinking for my "studio" rack to go for a dbx 166 xl and sell the composer hoping to solve this problem...

I doubt that it's the LED's themsleves, more likely something else that's happening at the same time. What are the yellow LED's indicating?

they are indicating 2 different things in 2 different racks
and with led off there's no hiss
i'm sure that hiss is with with each yellow led turning off (no matter of volume and instrumet)!!!

I've been using behringer autocoms, which are very identical to the composer except for the tube emulation (which if figured would suck) in a church PA system (there are 8 of them in there) and my own amp setup. I've never had any problem with them, the only way i get hum is using the enhancer or the lo contour circuits so for the most part i leave them off unless I really have to boost the bass but i can normally do that from the desk.

Is it the meter leds that you are talking about or the ones under the buttons?

I'd suggest turning some of the enhancers etc off especially the tube one as it will probably hiss like every other behringer tube emulator I've used. also try using the gate to keep things silent there is nothing being played. Dont give up on it yet

I haven't used their Equalizer before so i cant help with that.

To sort out the Compressor try this, play a CD through the Compressor and straight into the amp with no other effects in the chain. Its best to use something with a fairly constant volume no big peeks. If you have something that can produce a constant note the use it.

Bypass the compressor section using the IN/OUT button( no light) .Set the I/O meter to read the input signal(Button out/Light off) if the meter is going yellow all the time then the Input is too hot for it so reduce the signal going into it(try the pad button round the back of it) until the yellow LEDs only come on when you are playing a heavy bit through it. The most the input LED's go to is between-3 and 0db 90% of the time only going above 0 towards the end of a crescendo for example.

Now that you have the input at a reasonable level push the I/O Meter button in so that it is measuring Output, now if the meter is in the yellow constantly then you are probably using the compressor to amplify the signal too much and so you need to turn down the output. Its best to set the output by ear so use the bypass button to set the output so that during normal playing there is no noticeable volume difference between when the compressor is in use and when it is bypassed, obviously you will hear a drop when playing a louder section through it or if you have the compression up really high. that should be you input and outputs set to reasonable levels.

If the hiss is still there then play around with the other features of the compressor and see if they are to blame, let me know how you get on

I've had a number of devices where the LED operation was audible. My impression is that it's a grounding issue, where somewher inside the device a small wire or bit of solder is bridging to the ground plane where it shouldn't. I solved that problem in a DIY pedal using a magnifying lens and a bright light, but I'd hate to have to do the same with a larger commercially-manufactured device. I did return a power amp to Carvin where the signal LED for one channel was audible every time it went out.

thanks bongomania, i think's it the same of what you have experienced!
i'm sure that's not a level problem because with RED leds they don't hiss... so it's a grounding problem in both behringer rack in yellow meter leds!

..so i'm going to sell behrinnger stuff and go for a dbx 166xl (i hope it won't hiss when leds go down :P)
