Ben Folds- Rockin' the Suburbs distortion

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I did a really quick search and didn't see anything, so if this has been covered, I apologize.

I've been listening to this particular album alot lately, and I keep coming back to the title track... specifically the last 30-40 seconds when Ben completely rocks out. I think I found the distortion tone I've been searching for for a long time. In the video, he plays a Ric thru and Ampeg rig, presumably an SVT head and 810 cab... is the sound he gets simply a tube amp that's nice and saturated, or is there a pedal that can get me the same sound (thus my reason for putting this in the effects forum)? I play all active basses thru a solid state amp, but I'd like to get this tone if at all possible. Thanks!

Pretty much all we talk about in this forum is how to get the tone of an aggro bass through a cranked SVT by buying a small, inexpensive pedal. I'm exaggerating, but not by all that much.

For starters there is the whole Sansamp line, which are designed to emulate the SVT sound. Then there are about four or five hundred decent-to-good overdrive and distortion pedals. Then there are a few "holy grail" pedals that step up above the rest, but they are invariably expensive and hard to find. The main one to read up on IMO is the BJFE Blueberry. In the more accessible category are the "boutique" clones of the old Ibanez Tubescreamer, such as the Fulltone Bassdrive, Xotic BB, and practically every other boutique pedal that calls itself a bass overdrive.

Anyway, pedals are great and often do the job just fine, but it's very very subjective. No pedal sounds identical to a cranked SVT, so if that's the tone you're after it's all about finding a compromise that will do the job well enough for your purposes.

In that video there is distortion on the chorus, but it's really hard to tell if any of that distortion is coming from the bass, or if it's just the guitars overlapping those frequencies. The only time I was sure I heard the bass distorting was in the last seconds of the track.

Most of the song is just Ric->SVT, but there is a distortion effect on the outtro. Probably a Big Muff->SVT track blended with a clean signal.

From everything I've read about the Ben Fold's bassist, he used a Russian muff on almost everything

True, a Muff blended (double tracked?) with a clean signal. But he was the bassist when it was the "Ben Folds Five". On this solo album Folds played bass.

So, clean mixed with a cranked SVT is the sound I'm hearing, eh? Perhaps I'll get there one day, but I don't actually use distortion all that much these days. Thanks for all the input guys!
