Ben Kenney's distortion tone in A Kiss To Send Us Off

During the bridge after the chorus in this song (1:39-1:46 in this video -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMBBQ5vt6KY) Ben's tone is very distorted, but is isn't a fuzz or an overdrive, it's something in between. It is very crunchy and gritty, which sets it apart from a fuzz. What pedal(s) could get me close to this tone?
