Best affordable distortion pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know affordable is subjective, but work with me here.

I'm joining a band that has a few sections where the guitars drop out of the mix and I think some distortion on my bass would sound killer. I'd like to keep it affordable. I guess below $100?

There's some fuzz and overdrive in there too, but that's a fairly broad list to get you started.
All under a hundred bucks, and most should be easily found at your local shop to demo.

There must be hundreds of distortion pedals available for less than $100.

Yeah, this is a really vague question.

As far as bang-for-the-buck, the Digitech Bad Monkey absolutely kills. You can get them for about $30 used, and they sound great stock. You can mod them for more low end, but it's not really necessary, in my opinion.

If you are interested in doing some work, you can build devi ever pedals for around 30 dollars. They're normally pretty expensive pedals that go for around 100 dollars.

I thought the bad monkey was worth about $30 and no more... but that is just me. I had a "badder monkey" and still wasn't impressed.

for under a 100.00 that isn't a fuzz... METAL ZONE! Or ODB3

I bought it for my Jackson guitar, but it melts faces on the bass as well.

Sorry it was so vague. I'm new to the world of bass effects, so forgive me.

If you want more precise answers, a good way to get them would be to post up a few youtube clips with the distortion/fuzz/overdrive sound you're looking for.

No rush, just pointing out that a thread asking "How do I approximate a sound like this ____ on a $100 budget" is a much more specific question, which makes the answers easier to give and more helpful to you.

BTW, welcome to the effects forum. You can check out any time you'd like, but you can't ever leave.

Its true, i checked out for a while and my wallet thanked me.... but GAS is a terminal illness/love.
Considering a lot of the cheaper ODs and distortions should be available at local music stores, id suggest going there and trying them yourself, recommendations, clips and reviews are great but nothing beats trying it yourself.

Ok.

Maybe I was using it wrong or didn't give it enough time... Or was just expecting too much???

FWIW I wanted to like it and didn't.

It may have been one of those situations where something is so hyped up that you expect it to be the end-all. It's a low to medium gain overdrive in the Tube Screamer family, so it's not a high-gain distortion. I think it does what it's supposed to do very well.

Sure. I am not a fan of toobscreamers in general (on guitar or bass) so that is prob. the reason. Its just not 'my' sound. YMMV obviously.
