Question Best all-around mail order house?

Sign in to disble this ad
I haven't ordered anything new online for quite some time- what's the most reliable(or worst/least reliable)online shop? I'm looking for a Stereo Memory man w/Haz, specifically. Thanks.

Sweetwater (www.sweetwater.com) are nice to work with, and they give you free candy with every order.

pedalgeek is good.
For all the ragging they get, musiciansfriend is good.
musictoyz are good, but don't take their 'in stock' indicators seriously. Call before you order.

Pedalgeek and Steve's Music (not the big Canadian company) have been good IME. Tonefactor has a great rep.

I recommend avoiding Music123 (owned by GuitarCenter.com and Musicians's Friend). Have had frustration with too many transactions. Their customer service is unacceptable.

ZZounds.com has been kind to me. I haven't had any problems with musical stores, but tigerdirect and amazon both suck big time - bad enough that i won't do business with either ever again.

My go-to places for boutique stuff are always ToneFactor and PedalGeek. They also carry EHX stuff so they'd likely have the SMM.

For more name brand stuff (especially if I'm not sure I'll keep it) I use Sweetwater. They've got a 30 day return policy and great service.

Thanks, everyone- I'm sure others will benefit from this info. I already went w/Sweetwater. Ironically perhaps, I ordered online, soon thereafter leaving for a few errands. When I returned home there was a message from Matt at Sweetwater; he needed to confirm my shipping address. Not their fault- we've emoved twice in the past year(long story), so any one of 3 different addresses can show up attached to my credit card. I called back but it's past 5 back east so I'll likely have to wait until Monday to clear it all up. Aagin, not their fault & I can at least say they called pretty quickly.
Wait, wait, wait...

+1 with Sweetwater. I have nothing but good things to say about them. One of their sales guys called me about 6 months ago to let me know about some new sale prices on a few things that I'd ordered from them in the past. Not just emailed, but actually called me. It wasn't a solicitation call, just him letting me know what they had going on. I think they're great for accessories especially because they don't have any shipping charges. Their prices are a little more up front but I found that even with the cheaper MF/M123/zzounds/etc. prices, they add shipping and it adds up to cost more.

The only problem with Sweetwater is that their selection is, uh, selective. They only carry about half the ehx pedals, for instance. And of course they can order stuff, but by the time it gets to them you could have it in your hands from someplace else...

Another thing: my brother ordered some tubes from sweetwater and after they came, a sales rep CALLED HIS HOUSE to see if everything was all right. He spent under $50. When I placed an order shortly after, the same guy called my house and asked me questions about what was going on, had I passed my bar exam, etc - QUESTIONS FOR MY BROTHER. Kinda creepy if you ask me, but I HAVE ordered from them since and I always prod the guy with lines like "the would-be lawyer's ne'er do well brother" in the comments. He hasn't called either of us again.

Oh RE: the candy, I've receved Bit"o"honeys, Laffy taffy and they always include a fistful of smarties (the US kind, not the UK M&Ms). And maybe a hot cinammon drop or two.

Yeah, forgot the part about their selection not being as good as the other places. That IS a little odd about the guy calling, but then it was probably them being nice. The guy that called me didn't ask any personal questions other than things that I thought they could do to improve their service.

I've also gotten the candy. Bit 'O Honey, hard candies and Smarties. I think it's cute.
