Best auto-wah options

Sign in to disble this ad
'Afternoon. I'm looking for bass auto-wahs that are closer in sound to actual wahs than to filters. I've got enough filters for now (modded Bassballs, FX25 and 25b, Boss FT-2, Digitech BSW) and I'm quite satisfied with that line-up. What I'm looking for is a good quality pedal that will give me the actual wah without having to step on the pedal all the time. Keeping a good low-end is also mucho importante. I want to buy new (hopefully), but not looking more than 150 $.

So far, I've tried (but haven't bought):
- Ibanez AW7 (not bad for the price, could still be an option)
- Boss AW-3 (which I found way too synthy for me)
- used Boss TW-1 (close, but horrible on low-end)

There's gotta be other options within my price-range, right ?

Honestly the MXR Bass Auto Q is probably my favorite all purpose pedal of all time. Surely my favorite wah of any kind. I bought it new when I first started getting into effects years ago. I would never dream of selling it.
I feel it is an absolute MUST HAVE for any bass players arsenal!

I totally agree 100%. Out of all the Auto wah's and evelope filters I have heard and tried I still can't find anything I like better than this pedal....at least yet.

Do you want another envelope filter or an auto wah? Envelope filters apply the wah effect to the attack of your notes, auto wahs wah up and down to an LFO (low frequency oscillator) giving the effect of rocking a wah up and down to a tempo.

As far as having bass wah tone goes, the MXR Bass Auto Q has the same circuit as the 105Q Crybaby Bass Wah for the effect. You can move around one of the blue jumpers on the circuit board to make it do envelope filter, auto wah, or envelope filter that decays into auto wah.

Got enough filters for now. The only other one I could add would be the Groove Regulator, seems pretty awesome.

I'm really looking for a wah without having to play footsies.

Well, just so you know rocking a wah pedal up and down to the beat is really not usually the best way to use a bass wah, and that's the same effect (at best) you'll get with an auto wah. It can be extremely rhythmically limiting to have LFO rate control only as opposed to expression control; you may want to accent a note that will end up getting swallowed up by the low end of the LFO sweep. There is no such thing as a lazy man's wah pedal.

By the way I mean no offense if you're physically unable to actuate a wah... I used to leave my wah close enough to my drummer for him to actuate the treadle haha. He's from the VI so he's grown up with enough rhythm that he has four brains like that.

Mark, don't worry, none taken :-). Your comments were quite helpful, as I am relatively inexperienced in effects.

The term "lazy man's wah" is damn accurate, that's exactly what I was hoping to find. For now, it's probably going to be the MXR unit, but must admit the GR is also quite intriguing.

thx

If I remember correctly, the unit I saw up here ranged almost around 300 CAD $. Not in the budget for now But I agree.... quite impressive.

I used to own a Boss AW-3 and while it wasn't nearly as high quality as my Groove Regulator, I did find it to be a surprisingly good pedal. One is an autowah, the other is an envelope filter, so it's not an apples to apples comparison, but you get the idea. I didn't have any tracking, or synth sounding issues with my AW-3 once I spent enough time with it to figure out what settings worked best. The number of parameters you can tweak and sounds you can get from it are a blessing and a curse. Not a pedal that you can quickly setup... Well.... I couldn't at any rate,
