Best Compression Pedal for under $100

Sign in to disble this ad
Howdy all,

Looking to get into the compression game. My girlfriend gave me a giftcard for musiciansfriend for $100.

I'm mainly just using this to help when I play harmonics (they're never as loud as fretted notes, or sometimes too loud)

I think that the Ashdown Compressor would work well. Its only $50 and would leave me with enough money to get a set of strings or something to top it off.

Any other recommendations?

The Ashdown is not bad, but for a small amount more I'd rather have the BBE Opto-Stomp. It's easier to get good results from, and is smaller.

+1 or spend a little more for a Carl Martin... Read Bongo's reviews. He's really put a lot of time, care and energy into it!

I love my EHX Soul Preacher... I know bongomania had to do some experimentation to get it just right, but when you get the internal trip pot set right, it's fantastic. I think they just set if from the factory to be able to get a huge amount of squish and such, which is okay on a guitar like a strat, but not so great on a bass...

Yep, I love it. It is a bit more expensive than $100 though.

Why is that? From memory, when I read bongo's reviews, he was a fan? Its quite a popular compressor.

Is there something you read that put you off? I currently use a Punch Factory, but am considering moving to either a Multicomp or Compulator. Unfortunately I don't have access to try either locally. I have been thinking I will probably go for the Compulator, but am interested in what killed it for you with the EBS

I may be wrong, but the eBay links may be irrelevant to this thread....Useful information for others maybe, but it sounds like the OP has $100 to spend, and it has to be spent at MF.

Me? I played around with an Opto Stomp in one of the local shops and if I didn't have my DBX rackmount I probably would have bought it. It worked well for what I needed....And it's $99.99 at MF with free shipping.

Perfect.

I don't use compression much but I like the Opto well enough because it doesn't color the sound much.
