| | | | Best cool effects for an all analog heavy effects user okay, so my current board is a byoc octave divider into a bass big muff into a bassballs into a fender chorus into a dunlop bass wah. it sounds cool as hell. i currently use different combos of those pedals to make a real synthy space metal sound by going an octave down and fuzzing out my D and G strings, with some chorus and bassballs as i see fit, but i also want to do some more noisey kind of sounds, maybe by adding a feedback looper with delay. any recommendations for some fun pedals to add to my chain? |

If you want to go upscale analog look at some of the Moog toys. The phasor is a funk in box that does so much more. The Ring mod take ring mod to the limit. And so much more. The Murf is the type of thing that while complicated as it is offers an amazing amount of power.
Then there's the 105Q. |

As you would imagine, this is not a popular opinion on TalkBass' esteemed effects forum, but since I have been drinking beer that I brewed myself, I don't care.
Anyway, get a Moog ClusterFlux, a Way Huge Supa Puss, Moog 12-Stage Phaser, and a Morley Power Wah Boost, for the modulation; add something dirty, and you win. Winning is good.

But effects? I do TONS of reading here, ask questions whenever they arise (and the search function fails multiple times ), and try to justify/quantify one purchase.
Some are failures and you simply resell and invest in something else. Sometimes it's cheaper and you get a better effect for your situation and make money! Most of the time you bite the bullet and lose a little.
Perfect personal example: I wanted a reverb, and I wanted one that I could accomplish a lot with a little pedalboard space and STELLAR results sound-wise. Pulled the trigger on an Iron Ether Nimbus. Could've started with the fleabay JoJo reverb, but have come to the conclusion that I will never need another reverb. Problem solved!
And when I question my decision, I go fiddle with it and read here. I'm soon reminded I made a great choice, and saved time and money for other adventures!

you can get square wave without filters. its a very good sounding square wave in my opinion. especially with good compression. the filters are great too. i love the synth sounds i get from mine. i am using the mxr bass compressor with my board as well. also i love chorus pedals. i have a the boss ceb-3, and i heard the earlier models were analog. but the newer ones are digital. |

| | | | I just sifted through EHX's site and I'm now most likely gonna get a Memory Toy, Superego, and a Freeze in the future. thoughts?
Actually the superego can do everything the freeze can, so just a delay and the Superego. any good budget delays?

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Raleigh, NC | | | Just a thought here...I picked up an EHX Bassballs to replace an old Ibanez SB7 bass synth pedal. I used to run the SB7 through a BigShot mixer pedal...it was so thin-sounding that it really needed to have a LOT of the dry signal mixed in to be halfway useable. (Even then, it was still really hard to get a decent sound out of that pedal...it tracked great, unlike the Digitech and Boss synth/wah pedals...unfortunately what actually came out of it sonically just wasn't very useable...there was no attack at all, just a bunch of sweeping and quacking mush that occasionally fit some weird washed out section of a song....LOL.) The mixer pedal however made a pedal with unuseable tone (occasionally) useable.
Anyway, I started playing with the Bassballs pedal...sonically similar type of effect, but MUCH better. The tone I liked the most was with the distortion switch on and the knob about halfway (I adjusted the two internal trim pots both to their lowest frequency setting...sounded best to my ears). Even with that, I still felt like the Bassballs took too much lows out with the distortion switch on (it was fine with the distortion switch off), so I put that in the BigShot mixer pedal's effect loop. Now, with the distortion + twin filter effect ADDED to the dry signal rather than REPLACING the dry signal, the Bassballs truly kicks a$$...the dry signal + the Bassballed signal have a remarkably strong and distinct attack (even with fast muted notes) followed by the sweep on any sustained notes...exactly what I was looking for. EH really should add a blend knob to that Bassballs pedal!
My point is that most effects pedals are designed to REPLACE the original signal (except for the handful that have a blend control or similar), but sometimes you get much better results (and quite different tonal output) if you ADD the effect to the dry signal instead. So, maybe try adding a mixer pedal to your board!
The next pedal on my list is an EHX Bass Microsynth.
Cheers,
Dave

You can dial in just about any amount of grit or shred you want, and the pedal primarily concentrates it in one of three midrange areas (selectable via a switch). You can EQ the distortion, and blend the dry signal with it as well, all in the same pedal. Great sound. The only drawback is that it takes an 18V power supply, so you can't run it off an already-existing power supply chain.
Cheers,
