Best Delay EVER! (And A/S bar none!)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

I recently had an experience that was so good I had to share and give this guy some press, since his shop is fairly small but his work is world class, and he's an absolute legend when it comes to after service and quality control.

I got an Analog Delay from Smashing Guitars/Endangered Audio Research. I was looking for something sweet, unique.. you can find the details for yourself, but I ended up with a beautiful 4-knob delay with a self-oscillation momentary switch next to the bypass and 300ms of dusky, glittery lo-fi BBD delay, and in these times of economic trouble, all hand-built and sourced from the USA, local powdercoating for the boxes, custom made knobs, the whole nine yards, etc. It's run by a guy named Todd Kelley, and all done pretty much just by him, so it seems, and he can't be beat.

I got another effect from him, the only licensed reproduction of the Throbbing Gristle circuit, and it was a bit wonky but we couldn't figure it out for a long time. Tried different power sources, etc..

Anyway, we couldn't fix this one, which is an issue for me because I live in Seoul, Korea, so if I want to get something, or get it fixed, especially a boutique pedal, the shipping's gonna be an easy 30-40 bucks each way.

So he says, send it back, something's wrong and we can't figure it out since the issue of cutting in and out of the clean bypass, or intermittent signal, etc was really unpredictable.

He also says, I've been working on some upgrades for the delay. Send it along and I'll upgrade it cheaper than normal for your trouble.

So it takes a month or more before we realize there's a defective FET in the circuit, something I would have no way to figure out, and he bumps up the delay to 800ms with all that color and tone that I love in a delay, and he says, pay me 40 bucks. Mostly it's time, and normally I'd charge more, but send that and we'll call it good.

Now, I've had big-name effects before, EHX, MXR, etc, and I've often had trouble with service. Sometimes I can't even get these guys to return an email.

Todd is never quick with his emails, but when he does get back (and he ALWAYS does, even if it's a week later), you get paragraphs, literally, of well-thought out possibilities, options, expertise, and an almost excessive amount of care about his effects, which happily are growing in number slowly.

The box comes to my door, the Gristleizer's fixed and perfect, the delay is killing it, and he's essentially asked for the shipping. I know how much time and thought went into not only the fix but the upgrade.

He's set the standard for what I expect in service.

If you're looking for a sick delay made by a guy who deserves to succeed, check out Todd Kelley and Endangered Audio Research, he's on eBay and his website's in the middle on construction, and he's in Asheville, NC. And he's a legend.

Needless to say, I sent him more than 40 bucks.

My own pics when I've got a moment.. for now, a link to the eBay site. I checked his old site, which is now down, and the new one I don't think has full functionality yet.. the video gives a great sense of the sound and color, though to get a sense of how great Todd is, you might have to email him..

I like the look, very '70s.

Plus it's possibly the coolest name for a company I've ever heard.. and I like the logo. You know, it's the little things. ;-)

At that price, does it clean windows and do the dishes?

Yeah, no, being a grown-up, I mostly do those things myself!

But seriously, yeah, it's pricey. I'll tell you what, though - the Eventide is probably a great pedal, but the sound didn't do it for me possibly since it's digital.

The only other pedals I even had on the table by the time I was done looking were the empress Superdelay and the Diamond Memory Lane 2. So the empress is 450 new, plus shipping and duties (Customs is very keen to get their cut, smarmy bastards!) ad the Diamond pushes 500, if I recall. They also do a lot more, but here's my emerging rationale:

I liken it to supporting a local book shop that's across the way from a big box store that discounts, but doesn't need the business. I think Todd has a great concept, and excellent execution (the thing plays like a dream, simple enough to toy with on the fly but flexible enough to cover a pretty wide range of applications) and he's a start-up business.

I really think small-businesses begin encouraged by local economies are the only thing that's going to fortify the US at this point. I don't believe in right or left, I believe in supporting guys who are making it work. Endangered Audio is what brands like EHX used to be back in the 70s - local, supporting both labor and vision.

I don't mean to get on a soapbox, but it means a lot to me that this thing is tied into a lot of American jobs, even if in a small way - local powdercoating, custom knobs, all constructed in perhaps a slightly less efficient but very solid manner that requires time and skill. I feel like we've gotten away from appreciating time and skill in products, and now there's this divide: cheapo goods from far away that do nothing to sustain local economies, and pricey boutique goods from people who've decided to make a go of things but who don't have the means to make things at a competitive price, at least just yet.

I guess that ups the value, at least for me personally. I was disheartened, but not at all surprised, to see that my EHX Hog was made in China. I guess I had imagined they were still building in New York, or wherever they're based. (That's something I appreciate about Diamond, and possibly empress, though I haven't heard back from empress and Diamond talks a lot about being a Canadian owned and operated company, which I really appreciate.)

Wow, long-winded, I know. Anyway, I feel pretty good about the AD4096.

I like the RE-20, by Boss - it doesn't sound very digital to me(even though it is):

With some ironic contrast to my previously stated preference for analog delays, I run a Yamaha DDS-100 next to it to capture the grit, and the DDS by itself, which is obviously digital, has great character of its own, especially with the volume and feedback knobs up around the 9 o'clock position.. and I got that pedal for free! (Another story of unsurpassed and probably never-to-be-repeated service..)

I have been experimenting with running an analog and digital delay in parallel.

Super cool looking pedal...I wonder how it compares to the Empress delay.
