What would be some good effect pedals to produce a nice, even, buzzy distorted tone? Not a straight-up "fuzz" pedal, trust me, I've tried those and most of them suck (Digitech, Boss, Ibanez Tone-Lok, etc.) and instead for that I just use my amp's built-in tube drive. But I'm looking for something that sounds more refined. If you want to know what tone I'm talking about, check out the bass in the songs Starlight, Hysteria and Time is Running Out by Muse, and Meet Your Master by Nine Inch Nails.

But that Chris Wholsenholm (probably not even close) synth-fuzz tone is as elusive as it it coveted. |

You could get that, or try out one of the other popular Brassmaster clones like the Malekko B:Assmaster. The MXR Blowtorch works very well for this, too.
For Muse... it's a combination of pedals for that synthy, somtimes buzzy fuzz. Do a search on Wolstenholme here and you'll see what I mean.
The MXR Blowtorch works nicely for covering a lot of those sounds from both bands. It's another reason why I own it.

What you want is either a special order Tone Factor Bass Fuzz Saw or a Bozz FZ-2 they don't get any more hardcore than those 2 both get me closer to the whole NIN thing particularly the FZ-2 highly recommend that pedal.
Oh and if you can stand the crap bypass and the slight loss of bottom end the Danelectro French Toast is about as crazy as you can get in a production model fuzz and nails the Muse tones with the upper octave, I keep meaning to buy one and get it rehoused. So in the ssame vein the Fender Blender would be good I've heard some mega synthy samples with one of those

It may not be what Wolsterholme is rockin', but people still 'get it' when I use it to cover his tunes (Starlight, Hysteria, Time is Running Out). If you have a bigger nastier budget, get the Zvex Woolly Mammoth! |

I don't know if anyone else uses one of these but for recording it adds a great sound - from overdrive to distortion to fuzz.
It lets the original tone through and is just class, never fizzy and well....exciting!
....much better than my Boss pedals.
On the down side it is a little "unpredictable" so I would be reluctant to use it live without trying it for a while in rehearsals. (However, I have the 2000R model and IIRC it has been updated since)....
...for recording, when you have the time to tune in the tone and get the gain just right on a re-amped bass, it really comes in to its own. It is really good on guitar too, responsive to your playing and gives something extra, rather than just imposing it's own character alone, like the Boss pedals seem to do.
It did cost me the price of 2 or 3 cheaper pedals, but it is worth it. It gives more tonal variation and of a higher quality than 2 or 3 cheaper pedals. |

I am using it with a Fender Precision (MIA) and a Sansamp RBI and have noticed no tone suck.....
It does take a fair bit of adjustment to get it "just so" though, and it takes a while to get the ear adjusted to hear exactly what it does. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
