There is no best, that's why I have three. MXR M82, Source Audio BEF and a Chunk Systems Agent 00Funk. None could substitue for another.

Yeah, "best" really is relative here. In my experience, it takes a lot of experimentation to find exactly the filter (or filters) that float your goat. I ended my search with the Enigma, which I love, but it's clearly not for everybody.

+1. The fact that a lot of people can't dial in the tones they want with the Qballs worked out perfectly for me. I got mine $120.00 shipped, and it has every filter tone I was looking for and then some. It's also the best filter mimic I've ever tried, so I saved a ton of money by not needing a bunch of other very good but expensive filters. I only wish it had presets!

I have a few filters and tried many more but the only one I can't seem to do without is EHX Bass Balls so guess it's my choice for best.

I've owned 8 filters so far and am very VERY happy with the xero and source audio bass envelope filter pro. Neither of them are going anywhere- but I do want to play the subdecay prometheus dlx some day.

If I was made of money I'd own every filter- to my ears filters seem to be the most unique type of effect, each one really has it's own way of effecting your sound. As much as I love effects like fuzz, imo they don't vary as much, probably because they don't interact with playing dynamics as much. Filter filter filter filter filter filter filter filter filter filter filter mmmmm semantic satiation

My personal favorite is the 3Leaf GR. Need some more time with my Xerograph, though.

Voted other for DOD FX25B. I really like my Bassballs also, but the DOD takes it for now.

EDiT: for the record, there is no "best" enveloppe filter, IMO.

Another vote (since it's not in the poll) for the 3-leaf Audio groove Regulator. It shall NEVER leave my board, actually almost my entire board is in the effects loop!

Also another of my favs is the envelope filter on the Digitech BSW

I haven't tried enough of these to make a good decision, but out of the ones I have tried. I'm going to say Xerograph Deluxe. I do want to try some 3 Leaf Audio pedals soon though. The Proton makes me slightly horny.

I've got the source audio and that thing is pretty good, though it takes some getting used to when using it at volume. But some really sweet sounds...

Envelope filters are definitely one of those things that are open to interpretation, since they react differently with different basses and different playing styles. That having been said, I think that the MXR bass envelope filter is the probably the best filter to get started on until you have a chance to try others and see what works for you.
