Best hardware platform for a hand drums/percussion drum machine?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to create a drum machine that I can use in live performance.

The drums will be tabla, djembe [conga ], tar [frame], and doumbeck. These are Indian, African and Mid-eastern drums.

I will use loops. Most of the drums will be in one key but there will be a variety of rhythmic patterns. The tablas will be recorded in both different keys and different rhythmic patterns.

I will probably only need around 30-40 loops total.

The playback criteria needs to include the ability to play the loops individually and also very importantly, to be able to speed up or slow down the loop without changing the pitch.

I am aware that there is very significant software capability for this type of application but I have made an executive decision that I do not want to carry around a laptop. So this will need to be a stand alone unit.

On a simple level, even the Boss RC20-XL could do the job. It has the ability to save 11 loops and the speed can be adjusted without changing the pitch. I would like a little more flexibility.

The other device looks promising is the Roland SP-505. This is a sampling station but can probably do everything I want and more. However, it has way more options that I need. BOSS SP-505 Groove Sampling Workstation :: Overview

So any other suggestions for a hardware platform that would provide what I need would be greatly appreciated.

Look into an iPad.

There are so many cheap apps out there that can do this and more. A lot more. The iPad is great on stage. It is stable and has no issues with crashing. It is easily manipulated during performance, unlike a laptop. It is easy as hell to carry around and doesn't need any real additional hardware.

I would say that an iPad would deserve a serious look. Do some googling and look into it. Even if you find that it doesn't fit your exact specifications, you can have it as a comparison shopping idea.

Thanks, I will look into that.
