In that price range, go for the Zoom B2 or B2.1u. The modelling kicks ass, but they are a pain to tweak on stage as you have to go through various menus etc, which is why I sold mine and bought a VT Bass...

+1 on the Zoom. I'm frantically trying to find a 2nd hand B2. The main difference betwwen the B2 and the B2.1U is the B2.1U has a built in expression pedal and also has a USB out so you can record directly into your computer. the B2.1U also comes supplied wth a copy of Cubase recording software.

Both units get very high ratings from almost anyone who uses them. If you do a couple of searches on here you will see what people say about them.

I'm reaaaaaallly liking the looks of the Zoom B2.1u.

I might get that one, for the simple fact it has USB recording, and that seems like it would be much better quality than my recording methods.

+1 to the zoom b2.1u... Quite an amount of tones, effects programmed in. If you are using it for a gig or just for a casual jam at home, its a great lil multi-efx. Easy to bring around too. With the build in drum-tracks you wouldn't feel so bored when practicing at home.

I don't like the way the Zoom pedals work, they may have a nice sound, but they're not enough tweakable for me (for example, the delays: I can never achieve what I want).

I'm partial to the Yamaha Magicstomp, but it's not very good on distortions, I'm afraid (probably the Zoom B2 is better distortion-wise, but my opinion is that you can always buy single distortions, a Bad Monkey costs nothing, a PD-7 likewise, so why bother with cheap digital pedalboard distortions?). Even though... well, I really liked the fuzz, for a synth-like sound (slow and fat notes), plus distortions can be EQed twice, pre-effect and post-effect, which is neat, I think (you can feed more treble to the distortion, to get a harsher effect, and then add bass afterwards, to get more beef).

On the other hand, it's super tweakable and the effects are very good (especially modulations, reverbs and delays... I actually prefer the Magicstomp's phaser compared to the Small Stone, for example ).

My first multi-effects pedal was the Digi-Tech BP200. It was $159 off the shelf and a descent value. Lots of effects and some modeling. I found it beefed up my sound alot. My main complaint about this unit is that the LED display is impossible to read in direct sunlight (daytime outdoor gigs). I dont know about the Zoom, but I thought the DT was a good starter pedal.
I've since stepped up to the Line 6 PODxt Live which is somewhat pricey ($400) put far more versatile and liquid crystal display can be seen in all lighting situations.
