Best Overdrive Pedal For My Setup?

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay did the requisite search on here, but it seems that everything varies according to a person's individual setup. I'm looking for an overdrive pedal that will give my sound just a bit more "edge". My band covers "Gimme Three Steps" by Skynrd so I'm looking for something that sounds like the overdriven bass line from that song.

I'm playing a Fender Roscoe Beck IV through an Ampeg SVT-VR/810 rig. Of course you're going to tell me to turn up the Ampeg (can't beat real tubes being overdriven!) but this isn't really possible decibel-wise. Right now I can't turn the volume past 10 o'clock without bandmates complaining!

Seems like the EH Bad Monkey gets good reviews. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money (probably only use it on a few songs) and am willing to modify a stock pedal to make it more bass-friendly (I have soldering skills). Thanks!

I think the only one that can make this call is you. it's all taste really.

now if you have a few OD pedal you want our two cents on. we'll be more that glad to help you there.

Never used a Bad monkey.

but I like my Fulltone OCD very much. I've read that the Danelectro get's a similar sound for a fraction of the cost of the OCD.

Which Danelectro are you talking about? There are 23 different results on MF under Danelectro overdrive pedals.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. Noticed it has only a tone control. The Bad Monkey has separate treble and bass controls, might be better at retaining the low end.

Too expensive, not looking to spend much over $75.

Not gonna do it very well for under $75.00 unfortunately. Maybe a used EHX Bass Big Muff with the gain turned down real low and the clean blend mode on? Not my personal favorite but maybe a Sansamp VT Bass would get you there. Only problem is that they are still over $100 used.

I give a +1 vote to the OCD as I do like mine but I also want to give props to the Xotic BB Bass Preamp. Have heard a few clips of it and it sounds awesome. Should be able to give more input if needed after tonight. Mine arrived today and will be trying it after work.

I would say the VT bass would be a good fit with its Ampeggeish tone (I have one and Im thinking of selling it...not sure just yet) but like Simon says () they are usually $120+ used.

Digitech Bad Monkey is awesome and costs, like $25 used.

I'd also reccomend the Boss Blues Driver, for a decent and cheap OD.

Devi Ever Karaoke Party is excellent for abt $100 new (with shipping etc). I own an Xotic BB pre and it's Very good but the Devi KP has some midrange freq that cuts. It's just difficult to adjust the volume on, there is so much gain (being a guitar pedal). But it retains low end.
Sold my Badder Monkey...it didn't satisfy, maybe the buffer or something.

I already have an EHX Bass Big Muff; it doesn't really have the sound I'm looking for even with the sustain turned down.

The Devi sounds like it might have too much gain, plus it doesn't have any tone or EQ controls.

For under $75, you want the Bad Monkey or Behringer BDI21 (Sansamp clone). Hell, for that much you could get both, and they would even stack well together.

I would agree given the budget
