Best pedal to add a bit of dirt

Hi I play a Warwick corvette passive 5 string, through a peavey tour 450 and trace elliot 4x10 and 1x15 for a while now i've been looking for a slightly dirty distorted/ overdriven sound that keeps the bass clarity but adds some dirt, when i first started out brought a odb 3 and lets face it you get what you pay for, always sounded pretty sterile and synthetic. I play with fingers not plec, anyone have any advice?
sorry if this sort of thread already exists

If it's only a little bit of dirt you want, the way huge pork loin or the voodoo lab sparkle drive would be a good choice for that.

I'd second the Wren and Cuff Phat Phuk B, sounds amazing with my Warwicks!

I'm all for trying new pedals, it's the only way to know what you don't want. But I wouldn't discount the ODB-3 so quickly. I use it on one of my setups for a dirty boost. The secret to unlock on that pedal is to dial balance way back, then start the gain at zero and move up til you have enough dirt for taste. I also like to crank the bass and cut the treble, then set the volume at unity or a little higher for the boost.

I will say, in my constant fuzz search I keep coming back to the ODB-3 with the gain and balance at about noon. I have fuzzes that sound much better for recording, but they always need an EQ. The ODB-3 has that bass control built in and just sits really well in a live setting.

THAT SAID, if you're just over the Boss pedal, I would vote that you skip to the head of the line and get a Darkglass Microtubes B3k.

The digitech Bad Monkey is an inexpensive way to inject a little dirt to your tone.

The way huge pork loin and the voodoo lab sparkle drive both have a clean mix control which allow you to mix the dry signal of your original bass sound with the effected signal of the overdrive pedals. they both sound awesome on bass and it won't obliterate any of your lows.

IMO, the Fairfield barbershop is the best one that I've ever tried for adding a little dirt (and I have a pork loin, a musket and a sparkle drive). IMO, the musket is a fuzz (aacutally a modified big muff) so it's kinda silly to use one just for a little dirt.

Let me throw some love for the HBE Hematoma. I dig the pedal and they seem to trade for reasonable money.

+1. If you can mod the monkey for mids and lows, it's even better. I did that, and won't look back. I have more expensive "better" pedals, but this one is almost always on. And they're dirt cheap used. Mods and all, mine cost about $30.

I posted a similar thread not too long ago. I was looking for a Sansamp kind of overdrive, just to dirty my sound up a little. I ended up getting the Tech 21 VT Bass (v2) & I LOVE IT!!! It was just what I wanted to give me a little bite without being too overbearing.

I have a vox ice 9 overdrive I bought for my guitar but it has a pretty grungy sound with my bass especially with the "more" button pressed. Maybe try something like that?

VT bass is awesome. Lots of tones in that box, definitely worth checking out.
