Best Power Block for Pedals...????

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

Quick opinions on best power blocks to power your pedals. I've long been under the impression that the Voodoo Labs Power 2 Plus is the best. Heard T-Rex has a couple as well.

Just wondering...

I don't know if its the best, but I use a 1 SPOT.. It works and has never let me down.

For boss effects, a onespot will do.
Funny boutique 9V effects? I'd go with a Voodoo, just to be safe (common ground and what not)
Non 9V effects, especially digital or tube? T-rex.

They are actually designed not to add noise to your signal.

BBE Supa Charger works great. You can get them pretty cheap off the 'bay

I use one of these:

http://www.effectpowersupplies.com/9...-chain-2-p.asp

No noise and has been reliable so far. No need to spend a fortune unless you've got 12V or 18V pedals or need an AC output. Personally, I don't like having a 'brick' on my pedalboard so prefer the plug types like this one and the one spot.

I've used the 1SPOT and even though it was simple to hook up and had no noise I decided to buy a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus. It just feels safer because of the isolated outputs. Besides lifting the ground and taking away hum it also shuts down a pedal if the power shuts off, leaving the other pedals safe from being fried.

I've had friends who've experienced their pedals being fried due to 9v adapters, so I just wanted to be on the safe side. It takes up more space on my board though...

The Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ is probably the most versatile isolated power supply brick out there without getting into custom-built territory. The T-Rex Fuel Tank Classic comes somewhat close, but it's comprised of three isolated blocks; the individual outputs are not isolated from others in their block. The other T-Rex power supplies are isolated, but are not "flexible" like Classic is. The BBE Supacharger is the only real contender in that price range; it provides the essential features found in the Voodoo (and not the extra ones), but costs a bit less.

If you want something even fancier, Custom Audio Electronics (CAE) and a few other companies will build some really crazy power supplies for you.

I think if you need isolated outputs then the PP2+ is the best, if you don't then I'd go for the Diago Powerstation every time.

Toasted does have a point - isolated outputs are not necessary for most cases.

My T-Rex Fueltank works perfectly for me, at least.

+1 I found one brand new for $100.
I also had the Pedal Power 2 and I see now difference between the two except the Supa doesn't have SAG but I don't need or want SAG so whatever.

I have plans for a board with 3 12V 300ma pedals (TC novas), a 12VAC (english muffin), a few high current 9V effects (HOG) and maybe about a total of 15-16 boxes in all. I've all but given up finding one box to power it all, but the T-rex JuicyLucy+Classic combo seems to look like the best combo so far.

You're still going to have some issues. The HOG is, as far as I know, too high-current for any power supply I've seen, and the Muff'n has a very high power demand - more than the 12VAC outlet on the Fuel Tank Classic can provide. And if the TC Novas... are those just adapter ratings or actual draw values? If they're actual usage, then you're out of luck again.

One way or another, you're going to be hauling a few wall warts and a power strip.

I, and everyone that asks me how to power their pedals, use the Godlyke power all. It's simple and it works great.

I'm building one from a GGG PCB. It only has four outputs, but each is isolated, and I could always run a daisy chain from those 4 (4 outs, 5 links on a chain, 20 pedals if the current is low enough). And, it's been a fun little project too.
