which is the best power supply

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm slowly getting back into playing with effects and I'm putting a pedal board back together. I don't want to have individual power adapters for everything so I'm looking for the best functional power supply to use. The pedals I plan to hook up are (not in this order)
Moogerfooger lo pass filter (mf101)
tc electronics polytuner
sansamp para driver
EH bass micro synth
eh switchblade (not powered)
boss rc2 loop (at home not live)

I think all of these pedals run on 9v but the EH BMS and Mf101 have larger than normal adapters.

which should I be investigating?

Sometimes, there's no way to avoid using multiple power sources, such as when you have pedals that run on odd voltages, like the 2 you mentioned. Otherwise, just look around at what's available.

+1 to Rickenboogie, with those two pedals in particular, I'd use the power supply they came with. The BMS manual says it takes 9V power, but also says "Do not use a power supply that is daisy chained to other pedals in the signal chain." Sometimes when daisy chaining different pedals on the same power supply, you can get some bad voodoo and it'll actually add noise or other problems.

I have two boards and use a Dunlop Power Brick on one and a 1-Spot on the other and have had great results with both. The Brick is nice because it has both 9V and 18V power and can run things like my Tone Hammer and Pigtronix EP2 without a separate power supply. The 1-Spot is nice because it can run 8 pedals and while I've never had any weird problems, I do need an 18V wall wart for the EP2/Tone Hammer.

I've also read a lot about the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power and the T-Rex Fuel Tanks around Talkbass, but have never used them.

Depending on what you're using for a board, you can add a power strip for the wall warts without trouble. I've got a Pedaltrain PT1 and I've got a power strip mounted underneath. SUPER handy. I have my 1-Spot plugged into it, along with the 18V supply for my EP2 and can still plug my amp into it.

You might try looking through the Post Your Pedalboard threads. It started with
Post Your Pedalboard - Part I
and we're currently on PYPB XXXV: That's What She Said. Thirty-five threads of pedalboard goodness!!! (!) You're not the first to have the problem with wall warts, there's a LOT of great boards in there and you might get some ideas for how to set yours up in a way that works for you.

I don't use the EHX BMS all that often and honestly I'll most likely leave it off my regular setup when I get back to bringing the effects out to gigs. I guess I'm mostly looking to have my mf101, sansamp and polytuner all powered without the need of a power strip below the board. I'm looking to get a "pedal Pad axs road buddy" on order after my nye paycheck clears so If I have to stick to power stripping, at least there is someplace to store it.

Huh... If the Road Buddy is the board you're going with, I'm not quite sure why you're worried about having a power strip then. No one likes wall warts, but that hidden compartment should be big enough for whatever you'd need for power unless the Moog supply is truly a monster (I don't know, I've never seen one). Run the plug for the power strip out one side of the board and boom, you're good... All nice and tidy looking. Besides, you'll need to power your power supply somehow, and maybe it's just me, but I've never been a fan of plugging gear straight into a wall. Venues don't always have the best power...
