Best pre amp pedal for my G&L L2500?

Sign in to disble this ad
i want to buy a pre amp pedal for my G&L L2500, i want to run the bass in passive mode and use an out board pre amp to give it a new tone and also to run direct at times when i dont want to lug my amp around, anyway as you might know the G&L has really hot pickups, so I lowered them to chill them out a bit, and it worked great, but i am not that thrilled with the G&L pre amp, so i want to use a di box that has a pre in it, like a aguilar tone hammer or a sans amp bass driver di, which do you guys think would work best with a bass that is really loud and hot already, i play allot rock,u2'ish style stuff, and some R&B and gospel, i am all over the map musically, and i love modern tones like the stringray for example, could you guys advise me on what might be a good match for me?

I've read lots of good stuff about the new Tone Hammer.
I'm getting one soon. For the money I think it has the most features and uses, so that would be my recommendation.

- Lots of preamp/eq capabilities
- Clean DI
- Overdrive which is a plus compared to other "preamp only" boxes.

thanks for your reply's they are a big help, i almost wanted to get the Sadowsky outboard preamp, but i want a mid and sweep-able mid, and the Sadowsky outboard preamp does not have it, and my G&L bas only has bass and treble, so i am really wanting a 3 band eq, but if i ever had my internal preamp replaced i would get the Sadowsky internal preamp for sure, i have heard allot of G&L guys put Sadowsky preamps in their basses with really good results, anyway i am kind of leaning towards the tone hammer, but please keep your opinions coming i value them allot, you all rock and i have never been steered wrong by anyone on talkbass, every time i listen to people on here things turn out great, thanks so much everyone.

Well, if you run passive, the Sadowsky DI would be just like having the on-board preamp. They are the same - just that one is in a box with a nice DI, Tuner out, mute and bypass.

i think the sadowsky's bass and treble frequencies are different to the frequency of the eq on the bass.
imo the sadowsky eq is set at the exact sweet spots which is why i always use it no matter what im playing.

sorry OP i cant give u an opinion on another preamp pedal for you, cos the sadowsky is the only one i've tried and own.
but anyways im very happy with it when im playing with a band.
the eq on it slightly boosted allows it to let the bass sit well and the treble sparkle thru the mix.

you have a point, the frequencies could be way different compared to my bass, i think i will look into the specs of the sadowsky's range and the range of the G&L and see how different they are, thank you for your reply, and please keep the opinions coming, thanks everyone.
