I used to have a Symetrix 501. It was good but at the time it was possibly too transparent for me, I was pretty new to compression in general and it didn't have any "wow" factor for me. I sold it and got an octave pedal. Now I have a better grasp on what I'd like out of a compressor I wouldn't mind trying one out again some day. That said my FEA Dual Band Compressor is the bee's knees.

I've always wanted to try a SWR Interstellar Overdrive but I have no experience there. I only know of one other rack mount distortion unit, the Aguilar Aggro. There's just so much dirt flavor out there in stomp-box format why go for a rack unit?

Sorry I don't have a lot of experience with rack mounted gear but I hope that gets the ball rolling.

"Best" depends on what you are trying to accomplish, when it comes to compression. It an be a dBX 160X, a Teletronix LA-2A or an Empirical Labs EL-8 Distressor as each different things.

Overdrive really depends more on your bass and rig. You really have to season to taste with it.
