I'd like your thoughts. I heard good and bad stuff from the EHX Soul Preacher (I'm a EHX fan) but otherwise, what's good these days ? |

The Markbass Compressore is supposed to kill, but it's huge, and no one seems to be able to actually get one.
The Aguilar is terrific, if you're knob twiddler... it's got lots of adjustable parameters.
Me, I absolutely love my EBS Multicomp. It doesn't sound squashy, but it does a good job of lightly evening out transients and giving me a little more singing sustain. It's especially killer on fretless. Plus, it takes up very little real estate on my pedal board.
I'd personally advise against a Ross type compressor (like a Keely or an MXR Dynacomp). I have a Retro-Sonic for my guitar rig, and it's brilliant for chicken-pickin on my Gretsch guitars. But it sounded crap in my bass rig... too much pumping, too effecty. For bass I think that the more transparent and hi-fi you can afford to go, the happier you'll be. I like the EBS so much that I just leave it on all the time. It's an integral part of my tone, and dialed in properly it's truly set-it-and-forget-it. The only time I notice it is if I turn it off!
Oh yeah, like others have said, read Bongo's reviews.

I don't use as an effect, per se, but as a gain booster that also thickens up my sound when called upon to do so. Simple, quiet, effective, and I don't even think about having it on - until I turn it off for awhile. I don't use it on every song, just when I think it's appropriate. |

I like EBS pedals generally and this comp does the job in a subtler way than others. That said, in my setup it just compresses the effects and is blended thru an Xotic wet/dry back into the overall signal which includes a lot of dry. I don't compress the whole thing.

Oh yeah, like others have said, read Bongo's reviews. | I have the Markbass Compressore but its huge and doesnt run off batteries, which isnt a bad thing but I prefer running my pedals off batteries and not having to run extra power cables across the stage, it sounds great but to be honest the Aphex Punch-Factory sounds just as effective to me IMHO

Unless you are playing through an amp/cab that colors your tone so much that the pedal's tone is wiped out, and you have the MB set to very light compression. |
