Best use of a compressor with the bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Good evening all TB'ers,
Slight case of gas going for the Markbass Compressore. A compressor can be a very subtle effect but effective. As the sound guy for my band I use compressors to tame vocal dynamics and punch up some drum tracks, or filter out some unwanted sounds.
Can some of you guys describe or point me to some of the classic grooves of a compressed bass sound? Would you explain the reasons you love your compressed sound?

A compressor can improve the dynamics of an instrument that has significant dead spots or bright spots.

I was addicted to one for may years until I realized that it was desensitizing my touch. It also introduces hiss into the signal.

A compressor can also be used as a doorstop.

Markbass Compressore?? GOOOOOD CHOICE!!!

After much research, that's the one I selected, and I am VERY happy with it. Unlike most pedal tube compressors, this one actually uses the tube to do the compressing (I presume you have already read Bongo's reviews of compressors).

I find that using a compressor smooths out my sound. If I hit a string too hard, it will make me sound smoother. In that regard, I guess you could say it makes me sound like a better bass player. I use it very subtlely....almost not noticeable.

As for CD's with a compressed bass sound??.....just about anything you hear on a CD!

Pretty much every recording you've ever heard has got some compression on it.

Probably not really what you're asking, though, so I'll shut up now.

Listen to most of the funk stuff from the 70's, like Larry Graham or Louis Johnson. I love this tone.P Bass or Jazz with tons of compression. Of course, I was once completely addicted to it, but I use it more for effect now so it doesn't kill the dynamics. If you switch between thumb, fingers and pick though, it helps keep everything evened out in moderation as intended. I use a Punch Factory or Keeley 4 knob for dynamics, then an old MXR for the squeezy sound. Here's a p bass jam from MarloweDK that's indicative of what I'm talking about:

I really dig Levin's punchy articulate lyrical melodic playing as well as his squashed driving rhythmic work. For me, my compressed tone is a more electric as opposed to acoustic sound.
