Biamping and Effects Journey - Need Help

Sign in to disble this ad
Back Story:

My rig is a Laney RB9, RB410, RB115.

Effects are Prog BDDI, BBM, MXR Chorus, Voodoo bass, Xciter, punch factory

I recently noticed exactly how much of my big muff and voodoo bass I wasn't hearing with the lower fidelity of my amp and cab situation (because I heard for the first time in my recordings what the muff sounds like through good monitors which is where it rules) , the cabs themselves sound great, I have tried multiple amps with them and they always sound good. However the high end seems to get lost with the intensity of the other frequencies, so my fuzzes and o/ds are getting rolled over so to speak.

My question is this (even though Im sure most of you are lost)

Would running - eq -crossover - stereo pre amp - (ie Presonus Blue Tube) into a 2 ch power amp give me a little more clarity and seperation. Because I can dial in frequencies for the 410 and 115 individually.

Suggestions or other alternatives would be nice.

Thanks in advance.

And before anyone says it - You go look in the search because I just spent 20 minutes reading irrelevant material

How do you mean "lower fidelity"?

I find it odd that you're having high end retention problems. My bet is that it's your effect settings. Mind sharing those?

Also, biamping certainly shouldn't hurt your tone, so if you've got the cash and the drive, go for it.

basically what I find is the high end fizzle fuzz od clipping of distortions are not as pronounced as they are on the record recording direct in.

so there is some high end loss in my cab stack, which makes sense to me because its made for bass, but i figured i could take a lil low end out of the 4x10 (just a little) to focus on the upper ranges and then have the 15s for the lowest range of my spectrum.

+1 on the effects settings. If you want to get the most out of your dirtboxes, I've owned the PBDDI, the Xciter, the Punch Factory, and many thousands of dollars worth of dirt boxes (including several muffs and the Voodoo Bass), and I wouldn't run the PBDDI, the Xciter, or the Punch Factory with any other dirt. Every one of those pedals can color the sound a lot, and when you color it to much with too many different pedals with different frequency responses, especially something like a BDDI that scoops tons of mids with a Big Muff which also scoops tons of mids, things get too filtered through the "multiple filtering" of having several different pedals filtering or EQ'ing your signal to sound at all natural or generally pleasant. I'm certain having too much coloration on your sound is a part of your problem.

Other than that, you've realized your amp can also color your sound, so try working with the EQ on your amp for a flatter response would be my suggestion there, but also look into the frequency responses of your cabinets. Though you said they sound good, it's also possible the frequency responses of your cabinets aren't going high enough to get the high end sizzle you want. Just a thought anyways, though I think most of your problem is due to things other than your amp and cab.
