Big John Granny Puker and Obama Wah

Sign in to disble this ad
Just received them in the mail....comments to follow soon.

I got them directly from Big John (Jan) who was selling them used from his own pedal board. He sold them at a great price and he was a top guy to deal with. I am looking forward to trying them out. I think its time to do a pedal sell off though as I have too many to be truely useful now!

nice buy! how's the obama wah? I've tried the granny puker, but it was too weird and intense for me to be useful in a band situation. I would expect the wah to be somewhat more docile than the puker.

I had a hard time using the Grannypuker on bass.
Once I had fiddled it to a good setting it was an awesome synthy fuzz/distortion.

But, I don't like to use distortion/fuzz on bass anyway in my band (not really a band, guys jamming togheter).

My guitarist is using the Grannypuker now, as his only distortion.
It is sublime on guitar.

For bass I really like the Hairy Balls. More a "wet" fuzz, not as harsh. The gate control is useful if you play fast metal riffs.
I use the Hairy Balls now only for some Motorhead covers. I don't sound like Lemmy... because off course his fuzz was a Marshall guitaramp... but who cares. It sounds awesome.

I got to test the Obama wah today for a few minutes. in short: the distortion section is awesome, but the wah section (which is just a knob for filter sweep or 'fixed wah') was pretty much useless on bass. I tested with a Jazz through an Ampeg combo with eq flat, but all i got was mud.

I asked the shopkeeper to lay it aside for me for a few weeks 'cause he sells it really cheap, and even if I end up not wanting it anymore I can surely sell it for at least the same price.

I have only had about half an hour to play with them so I was going to wait to post detailed comments, but my thoughts on the fixed wah are pretty much the opposite. I found it to be a very sensible alternative to setting up a filter (and it's inherent "unpredictability") for bass. It's really easy to dial in great funky sounds or kick in the distortion for almost synth like sounds. It tool a few minutes to work out a goo balance of distortion an wah and to balance them with the basses, but so far I like it a lot.

I also like the granny puker for some crazy ass sounds.

grannypuker is my favorite name for a pedal ever. wish i could use one...i should buy it just so i can look down and see "grannypuker," then look at all the grannies i play for on a regular basis, and laugh my ass off!

Well, maybe I'll find some more useful settings for the wah once I've got more time to play around with it too. I only got to give it a quick test, so it might well be I missed some great tones.
If you ever find the time to post some settings you like, that 'd be much appreciated
