most talked about pedal on these forums, search would answer all your questions.....

but to keep my integrity and still be productive.

bass big muff - newest, for bass, 3 modes:regular, bass boost, and dry blend
Russian - Most bass friendly, can also be modded to reduce low end loss
USA - not as bass friendly muff
Little - supposed to be similar to USA but I see alot of bass players with this one too.

Any thoughts on wether this should be before or after a compression pedal in the loop?

A Big Muff will compress your signal quite a bit already, so you probably won't want to have your compressor on at the same time as the Muff. If you never have them on at the same time it won't matter what order they are in.

As for the order of effects, my chain looks like this:

Bass > Tuner > Envelope Filter > Compressor > Bass Big Muff Fuzz > Phaser > Delay > Amp

depends what you want to achieve, but i would put it after the compressor. the added midrange focus may help balance out the muff's natural scoop

I have the Made in U.S.A. "Bass Big Muff Pi" by Electro-Harmonix. It's one of the best pedals ever. It gives you all of the growl you need, without totally dropping the low-end. I haven't ever regretted buying it.

Mike what are your typical settings you use on it? I saw there was a 3 position switch and sustain, vol, and treble?

It's Actually Volume, Tone, and Sustain.

It depends on what I'm playing, but here are my typical settings:

Volume: 10 or 11 o'clock
Tone: 2 o'clock
Sustain: 9-10 o'clock

If I'm playing a bass solo that requires more scream, or I'm covering a bass solo that requires different settings, I'll tweek all of the knobs around (Sustain in particular).

Ah, I forgot to mention the 3 position switch you mentioned.

It includes Bass Boost, Normal, and Dry settings, and it changes the overall balance and blending of the distortion.
