Big Muff, Mod or Swap?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I use a Big Muff (USA) for my fuzz, I pretty much only use it for doomy type stuff, but the thing that get me is, it didn't come with the power adaptor (second hand) & I cant find something to make it work with the power bank I'll be using on my pedal board. So I was thinking that I have a couple of options to solve this.
1. Replace the power input with one like on a Boss/Digitech pedal
or
2. Get a new fuzz

Voiding the warant isn't really an issue with the Muff, as it's pretty old already, but would it be worth trying out a different fuzz? I'm not exactly rolling in money atm, so a boutiqe pedal is out of the question really, any suggestions as to wich is the better option, & if you think it's option 2, what would be a good replacement fuzz?

That is funny, I've always gotten DOD compatible power adaptors to work with EXH stuff: vintage 70's, Sovtek and the reissue stuff.

The question is time vs money vs how much do you love THAT big muff, there are many muffs around now.

get one of those 9v battery to dc adapters.

Not EXACTLY like this but similar. They make these with male ends instead of female.

Oh........ yeah............. open up the pedal and take a look at the connections to the power jack it's self, sometimes people hand tighten them and the connections can get broken, and I've also bought older EHX stuff were someone disconnected the jack it's self for some odd reason.

You have three options, all of which I've done in the past.

a) Use a battery clip adapter as shown above.

b) Use an 1/8" adapter for the jack. OneSpot makes these as well.

c) Modify for use with DOD/Boss type adapters. Easy to wire, but that stainless steel is HARD and will do serious damage to your drill bits. I nearly killed a $40 Irwin Unibit enlarging the hole big enough.

I recommend option A or B for ease. Should only cost about $6 shipped, too.

C is doable, but difficult.

Get an adapter, they are available for a few bucks.

The USA Big Muff sounds awesome on bass. Yes it loses some low end so it's not ideal as a "bass fuzz" as such, but in terms of ranking fuzz pedals by sheer awesomeness it would rank very highly. Maybe even my #1.

I'm going to be disagreed with but I love the NYC Big Muff.

Yep, and the disagreement starts now.

I've found two methods to retain the low end using a Big Muff... either a) blending a wet and dry signal or b) simply replacing the input and output capacitors on the circuit board.

Why don't you just pick up a Little Big Muff? They're pretty cheap, and AFAIK they are pretty much the same as their full-size brethren.
