Big Muff MODs

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anyone tried any of these mods? http://www.student.ru.nl/r.kerkhof/T...Big%20Muff.htm

There is one were you remove the first two diodes, which supposedly increases the bass response as you increase the sustain. Supposedly this is what the Supa Tonebender is.

Anyone?

I know someone just posted that, so stay turned and I'm sure it will pop back up

Some would say yes, but I think these forums are for communication, so I don't mind answering at all

Thanks. I looked up the thread I think you were talking about.

I'm a little bit confused though. Why did he put LEDs in place of the diodes? Any ideas? Seems like you could just remove the diodes, and replace them with wire or something, right?

Sure, I can answer that. First, keep in mind that an LED is a diode, just one that emits light. LEDs have a a different clipping sound than silicon diodes. An LED, some say, sounds more like a tube clipping than its silicon counterpart. I'm designing a aysm. clipping system with LEDs right now. Hope this helps.

O, removing the diodes and placing a wire defeats the purpose because in the Big Muff circuit, the diodes are what creates most of the clipping.

Ok, cool. Because in that link it says if you remove the first pair of diodes, you get a more bass response. So they're basically suggesting replacing it with a wire, right?

I could replace the second set with LEDs though, too.

I have a feeling I'm about to learn a whole lot about electronics. Fortunately I've had college physics which is a lot of building circuits

Right

You could, its just a matter of playing around and seeing which sounds better.

Lol thats what you get with me I suppose. Good thing my girlfriend is a Physics major or I don't think she could stand me.

Eh, I suppose, but I don't think I'd want to do that because it changes the clipping stages, which IMHO will loose its BMP tone. What I would do is trying tying a capacitor to ground from the input signal, so Resistor in series to Cap in parallel from the input jack. This creates a Low-Pass filter, theoretically improving bass responce.
