Big muff: Not so good on active?

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a big muff several months ago, which I have used when playing certain songs on my Schecter STilleto Custom, which has active pickups. Last week I dropped said bass off at a local guitar shop to get a set-up done. SO last night at band practice I was using my Ibanez soundgear, which has passive pick-ups. I noticed that when I used my big muff with it that there was more low and not as much noise saturation....in other words, it sounded better.

I think I heard people say before that the Big Muff just doens't sound as good on basses with active pickups. Anyone else here know if that's true?

I've heard this being said about the Wooly Mamouth but not the Big Muff.

I back what the last member stated.

As a muff clone builder, I can attest that muffs respond fine to actives.
In my experience, passives always sound better with pedals as opposed to actives. Try re-eq'ing your active to sound more similar tonally to your passive.

I was afraid someone would say that As my band mates can attest, I'm very picky when it comes to getting just the right tone. Thefore when I mess with the settings on my bass, I'm afraid I won't be able to get it back to where it originally was. Oh well. My guess is that if all it is is an adjustment then an increase of the bass nob and a change in the blend knob will perhaps get me the result I'm looking for.

I've had some problems with muffs acting funny with high-output instruments (the active nature not being part of it).
