BIG MUFF or ODB-3???

Sign in to disble this ad
i'm looking into purchasing a new distortion pedal and im tossing up between a bass bigg muff or a boss odb-3.

im trying to get a Robert trujillo like distortion tone, but at the same time, be able to do the screaming wah cliff burton for whom the bell tolls solo.
Thanks heaps

You are embarking on a perilous journey. The perfect OD is the Holy Grail of bass. I like the MXR Blowtorch. I don't much care for the ODB-3, it's too noisy. I haven't tried the Big Muff.

Both.

They sound different. I have and use both. However, most people don't know how to use the ODB-3 and dismiss it, but it really is an amazing pedal. If you don't have the time/patients to mess with knobs, get the Bass Muff... it's way more user friendly than the ODB-3.

How is it more user friendly?
The Blend on the ODB-3 actually works correctly.
The "blend" on the BBM doesn't.

The ODB-3 can do a bunch of sounds if you can figure out how to turn knobs.
The BBM gets three watered down muff sounds.

Both are cheesy.

Get a real muff.

I think the ODB3 is a very good pedal...lots of naysayers out there on this one, but that is why so many different drives are made..I am casting my vote cause you asked...

I have an ODB-3 and can never get decent sounds out of it. What are some of your settings?

To me the ODB-3 is like a drink with added sweeteners instead of true sugar.

Still wondering if I should mod it to make it more of an overdrive or just keep as distortion on a diet?!?

I owned an ODB-3 and I own both a USA "regular" Big Muff and Bass Big Muff. I kept the "regular" Big Muff for guitar playing and use the Bass Big Muff on bass exclusively since I bought it. I compared it side by side with a black russian Big Muff and my conclusion : I could get the same sound out of both pedals... but I had more with the bass version (possibility of blending with the clean tone and bass boost). And it sounds much better with bass then the USA "regular" muff, to my ears anyways.

Now, why have I let the ODB-3 go? Because you get that typical Boss-style distortion tone whatever you do with it and because the clean sound you can blend in is not your original tone, it goes through some Eq-ing. And, in brief, it wasn't what I was looking for.

Try both. They are good pedals, just not the same at all though... My preference goes with the bass big muff.

I have found that a pedal may work well with one amp configuration, and suck with another.
Big Muff seems to work well with bigger speaker drivers in my opinion, like 15's and 18's.

You might consider the Tech 21 XXL Bass.
It's heavy, mean, and throaty.
I like mine, when I'm in the mood.

Clean boost: balance and gain min, level and eq to your taste

Light overdrive: gain min, balance 10 o'clock, eq and level to taste

Heavy distortion: gain 11 o'clock, balance max, eq and level to taste

Now, I have a black and a NYC and I have owned a BBM, and yes I agree about it working on bass a "little" better then the NYC on lows, but even with bass boost the black has more lows then the BBM and sounds better. I'd actually say the NYC sounds better then the BBM and really for what it is [a "reissue"] it really isn't all that good it's self, I just use the thing to overload my black and green muffs which basically gets you the huge thundering sound

To be honest I got both my Black and my NYC after I had the BBM because when I got the thing [due to you people saying it was all that and stuff and it wasn't!] I was like "what the hell, this doesn't even sound like a proper muff"....! So I went out and tried a newer black at GC [I remember not liking the black sovteks for some reason that escapes me now] and was like "well this is nice, it sort'a sounds like my old green one that I've had forever" so I got it.. Then I thought "well if all you guys liked the BBM so much and hate the NYC then I should get that to make sure" And lo and behold it sounded pretty good, not great but still better then the BBM.. Which makes me want to find a good ramshead clone one of these days to replace it

I've owned the ODB-3 for about a year and a half and haven't tried any Big Muffs, but I love the sound of the ODB-3, there's alot of different possible sounds, but I haven't tried any Big Muffs so I can't knock them. I don't know why so many people don't like Boss products, I think they're great. When I bought the ODB-3 I initially wanted a distorted sound close to Cliff Burton (should've gone with a Big Muff for that) but have since moved away from that goal. Either way, the ODB-3 is a great pedal, although I think at some point in the future I'll get another overdrive or distortion pedal.
