big truck

So I work outside at Lowes
And lots of diesel trucks drive by, and when they are at idle they
have a real metallic sound to them

I was thinking if someone could duplicate that type of sound
for distortion that'd be just what i was looking for.
Something notchy and metallic

Anybody have any ideas if this may exist?
of if that makes any sense

a blow torch paired with a tremolo would do the trick i think. tremolo speed should be quite high up i reckon.

Notchy and metallic = flanger.

trem set quite squareish, on-off might do the trick. You would need some pretty thick *** distortion

i wish i had time to experiment now.... stupid work getting in the way of life....

Metallic = ring modulator thrown into the mix (?)

Awesome idea!

And yeah, distortion + fast tremolo would be my starting point for experimentation.

All good ideas, I was hoping to avoid using a trem, but it seems that could be part of the answer

Any other ideas of what type of distortion etc...

The Blowtorch would be cool, as would the ZVex Woolly Mammoth, or the Tech21 XXL Bass. All very nasty, dirty sounds. Combine that with a flanger, or a ring mod, or a trem and you'd get something very interesting.

wow, you wouldn't believe how often i'm told that my bass sounds like a truck idling. no joke, http://youtube.com/watch?v=-qIzZSMRKis that was just recorded with the mic. built into my camera, but give it a listen. it's a peavey millennium BXP-5 with the neck pup rolled off, TONS of mids, distortion knob on my turbo rat all the way up, and filter all the way down. the quality isn't great, so it needs to be loud to hear the sound, but yeah...listen to it, tell me what you guys think.

Edit: i should probably add that i'm playing finger style, and that i pick REALLY hard, but the sound might be better achieved with a pick

I'd try a Rat or a Diesel Dawg if you can find one.

Heres a track i've been wanting to try. The bass sounds exactly like a truck, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al25DiUiLcI

I'm going to check the ones posted. More truck!
