Black Finger Noise

I had ruled out the Black Finger from bongo's review, but then I saw this demo where it seemed like there was no noise, at at 2:15, the guy actually says that compared to othere compressors, it has a very low noise ratio. Here's the video - http://gc.guitarcenter.com/media/ind...x&vname=153325

First, GC will tell you the grass is blue and the sky is green if they think it will move product. Second, a common marketing technique is to address the worst quality of the product and say it's the best quality. For example "extra lightweight headphones" will usually turn out to be the heaviest ones you ever wore, and the "extended high end frequency range" will turn out to stop around 10KHz. I have seen this in ad copy for all kinds of products, for decades.

Beyond that, read my blurb about tube compressors in the section of my "top picks" on the reviews page. Heck, for that matter re-read the Black Finger review, as I addressed the noise question there pretty clearly.

I had one. It can be nice depending on how it's set, but it is noisy, no way around it. I use a Trex Squeezer now, and couldn't be happier.

Judging from the two that I had, the Blackfinger was the absolute noisiest POS comp I've had the misfortune to own.

The build quality seemed flimsy too, even by EHX standards. This is one "stomp" box I would'nt want to stomp on too hard.

That isn't noisy? Bongo's review said it was very noisy.

I know what you mean but that was just a crappy guitar center review, it was by the guitarist of sheryl crow, peter stroud. He does a bunch of ehx reviews, and you couldn't hear any noise in the video.

Do you know what I'm doing right now? I'm smacking you in the head. SMACK! SMACK!

Do you know why I'm smacking you in the head? No? I didn't think so.

Sorry, I lost my temper.

There is the bit where I said you should read a segment I wrote about tube compressors that makes it clear that different people will have different experiences with noise from their tube comps, largely based on their home wiring.

There's the fact that RickenB has posted many times before that he gets no noise from his Squeezer.

There's the fact that as always YMMV.

And there's the fact that you're bouncing all over the place in this compressor quest without actually trying any of the ones that were recommended to you.

Anyway, I am saying these things not to give you more of a hard time but rather to explain why I lost it for a minute there. Again, sorry about that!

No need for any apologies, I post way too much on talkbass without knowing much. I have to try some compressors out the next time I go to GC. I greatly appreciate the feedback you have been giving me, even when i have made ignorant statements.

BFE - H

I have the Black finger and it's the best and worst pedal I have... when it's dialed in and in the moment it's the sweetest sustain ever and when it's time to jump back for a 3 it's the swishin-est fuzz jammin piece of crap ever... so... I've tried all kinds of tubes in mine and unless u get those old GOV issue tubes it's noisy... even with those expensive tubes it just zaps your whole sound so not worth it.
