Red face Blue Berry tone knob

I've never come across a tone knob that acts quite like this one. Why? What makes it special? Many have used this pedal, several still do, and at least one person has put theirs on the operating table. That knob alone warrants discussion, because it changes the characteristics of the overdrive itself, although seemingly not in a real boost/cut/rolloff type of way.

I use mine set in one of two ways (with the drive cranked, like always):

1) At high noon, which retains a decent amount of treble and sounds like an angry tube amp about an hour into a dance recital. I've been using this setting more and more lately, doesn't cut through a mix like a TS-style overdrive, but has plenty of character that doesn't get buried either.

2) All the way to the left, which makes sense because the sound resembles the left hand path's final triumph over good (because good is dumb). Melts faces, makes children cry, and wages total war campaigns against unsuspecting enemies. I love it.

Share your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and lastly, knowledge concerning this mysterious control.

I have one, it's an amazing pedal. I bought abark's near christmas. I need to replace the footswitch and the paint's incredibly chipped (he did tell me about these factors before buying obviously) and it's still a fantastic pedal.

I usually have the drive cranked with tone knob between 11-1 o clock. I find it retains some of the high end as well.

I regret to say I have not yet identified the exact "functional" role of the tone circuit. The circuitboard is not an organized pattern of traces but more like random globs of solder holding clumps of components together. I hope to have it fully traced out soon- at that time I'll post it and somebody savvier than me can figure out the tone control.

Interesting... I was thinking about trying the same tone control on one of my next DIY pedals.

I gather you use the 3rd version. What values (R1, R2, C1) do you use for bass guitar?

Thanks,

Hey, you ungooped yours! That's not really the description I'd expcted to hear about the wiring though...

I like pretty much the same settings nad's got up there, but the cranked gain and minimum tone setting gets even better with a boost in front. I don't really venture up above about 1:00 often, I'm not a huge fan of the range it adds in. I have a hard time finding a "bad" setting with it though

The tone controls that the guy gets on his pedals are rediculous though. I've been playing with a couple other pedals by BJFE and one of the tone knobs seems to sweep from boosted bass and cut highs, to sort of flat, to cut lows, to cut low and boosted highs to suddenly boosted lows and highs at the clockise extreme. Its actually been kinda tough to get the hang of (well, for me at least).
