To BMS or not: great price vs redundancy

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, I need some advice: would you pick up a beaten but working EHX BMS for $150 even though it would be incredibly redundant on your pedal board?

The board goes:

in >> BYOC Lazy Sprocket >> DOD FX25 envelope filter >> Digitech Whammy IV >> DOD Bass Grunge >> BBE Opto Stomp >> Boss DD-6 >> out

So, I have every section of the BMS as a separate pedal and am pretty happy with the synth sounds I'm getting.

Thanks.

Only if you're going to invest in a true bypass looper. It will suck your tone significantly...

I can build a bypass loop for less than $10, that isn't a big concern.

For even less, you could just re-wire it to be true bypass. If it's not too old, it should actually have a 3PDT switch inside, so you'd just need to do a little rewiring and soldering.

IMO, a BMS may not be redundant as its filter section is not the same as your particular filter (or most envelope filter pedals, for that matter). Plus, the octave and fuzz sounds are noticeably different than what you have now, and they're mixed differently within the BMS. The section flow (octave/fuzz => volume swell => filter) is different than your current chain, too.

Of course, YMMV.

It's more of a sound preference issue and your desire to keep things separate, than simple redundancy.

The BMS is one of the kick-assest pedals on the market IMNSHO. Go get it.

I would hit. If you find yourself not using it, you could sell and get your $$ back easy.

+1

Chances are, if you end up finding it redundant or it isn't your thing, you could easily get your money back for it.

The BMS is an awesome piece and even if you don't use it live (I don't mine is strictly for the studio) it is such a great thing to use on all sorts of things especially for recording.

Get it

I easily rewired it for True Bypass using info on this'a here site.

I doubt you can get all the same sounds with what you have. The squarewave fuzz is what makes it happen.

And I'm finding more and more uses always for the attack delay -- think cool bowed sounds.

Okay, thanks.

I will drop the $150 on it, rewire it for true bypass and do the expression pedal mod. If I'm not lovin' it like McDonalds, I should be able to sell it for around list price of a new one, right?

By the way, has it been figured that this is the correct way to do the expression mod?
