Boost Pedal Question (It er, hisses a lot...)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,

At the moment i'm running P-Bass Custom --> TU-2 --> Empress Compressor --> MXR M-80 --> Zvex Super Hard On Clone --> Ampeg SVT3 Pro

So the boost is last in the chain because often I have found my live sound is a little samey in live situations, and for certain parts I need a little extra punch and frankly, I love a little extra gain and the M80's gain is just a little too... harsh imo.

Anyway, this boost pedal is pretty stuffed, I honestly can't use it. As soon as I hit the pedal, it sounds like there is a hurricane happening in my speakers, the *wooshing* sound is SO loud that I've even borrowed my friends noise gate (and experimented putting the boost pedal before the M80 to use it's gate function) but it does nothing.

Is the pedal supposed to do this? When i'm playing with the band, I understand that hitting the boost is supposed to make my tone a bit more gain-y, but the background noise is SO incredibly high, even with the gain and tube gain both at 9 o'clock on my amp. I bought the boost from a guy I know and trust to be a fantastic effects maker (modded lots of my bands' pedals perfectly) but yeah... Just struggling and don't know why a boost pedal clone which has been designed specially for bass is so unplayable.

Toto.

Unplug all other pedals from the chain and power supply. Plug bass, sho, amp. Same issue?

Yup. Bass --> SHO --> Amp, using direct wall wart power and it makes the same noise. I mean it's not some sort of noise that sounds super out of place, it is a boost pedal after all and I understand how they work but... it sounds like 4 midgets are stuck inside my amp all trying to shush each other as loud as they can!

Surely that's not normal!

I read somewhere that boost pedals for bass that are used with tube amps often have a bit of trouble.. True?

Not that I've heard. Where have you read that?

Can you record a clip of your issue?
