I've that Boss EQ pedal, and I have a Markbass 1x12 amp, and a P-bass...can the Steve Harris fans out there help me dial in some of his tone? Thanks, dy.

Get his signature Rotosound strings. They are Rotosound SH77.

Yup. That and the P-bass are the core of his sound, unless you're willing to invest in another amp! He's not a huge effects guy, correct me if I'm wrong.

I know of only one song where he uses an effect. Thats Blood On The Worlds Hands. The song with the kind of dissapointing bass intro.

The strings are extra heavy and you might want a pro setup to make sure they're playable; even then they may take some getting used to and get ready to shred whatever callouses you may have now down to the raw flesh. Welcome to metal city my friend.

never mind what they do to your frets!

But his signature strings are flatwounds. The definitively finger/fret-friendly type of string.

Anyhow... P-bass + flatwound strings are key. Otherwise, you won't even get close.

Nothing made by Rotosound is fret- or finger-friendly.

Touché.

But I'm sure the Harris flats are much kinder to both than their roundwounds...

You could cleanly decapitate an irritating bandmate with the "E" string in a Rotosound Swing Bass string set.

Oh do I know what you're talking about... I had to grow new callouses the one time I strung up my bass with them.

I put the signature set on my POS Squier P a couple of years ago. They sound awesome for that kind of tone (when they're fresh). They may also be a bit kinder than the Roto rounds to the fingers and frets, but NOT to the neck and truss rod.

As for the 'Arry's tone, when it comes to EQ, it can best be described as "a $#!+load of high mids".

Wrong! When I started using the Harris sig. strings... for the first month I had the most painful blister on my right middle finger. I played more than one show in pain. Luckily after the first few songs it kinda went numb. The blister went away one day and never returned. I guess my fingers are used to the roto flats.

And now I'm going back to rounds!
