Boss CEB-3/CE-5 and Boss BF-2 versus DOD FX62 Stereo and DOD FX72?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking to replace the chorus and flanger on my ME-6B, and have narrowed it down to two combinations. The Boss CEB-3/CE-5 (not sure which one) and the Boss BF-2 or the DOD FX62 Stereo Bass Chorus and the DOD FX72 Stereo Bass Flanger. If it matters the BF-2 is the Japanese version. I have seen many positives about the Boss but not much on the DOD's. Maybe someone can convince me to go with the DOD's, but I am almost sure on the BF-2. Which combination?

Thanks but the CEB vs CE-5 was the least of my problems.

The only flanger pedal I have ever used is the DOD FX72 Bass Flanger.

All I can tell you .... that's a winner !!! The knobs have a wide range of control and you can achieve many different tones, from classic jetfight-style flanging to speed-up psycho bubbling flanging. You can even reach a kind of tremolo by putting the speed all the way up and setting the width pretty low. Huge versality. No special volume drop or boost, the pedal is pretty respectful to the original sound. What I absolutely LOVE about the DOD FX72 is the very slight overdrive you get automatically at the end of the flanging cycle, when set to a slow speed. It really adds something to the sound.

I like adding some flanging to funkify things here and there, especially along with the Q-Tron+ or even the Dunlop Cry Baby Bass. When I use the FX72 with an overdrive or fuzz pedal, I am in flanging heaven.

The only complain I can tell about the pedal is its crappy plastic footswitch. For some reasons, it started to work every other time I kicked it, and suddently didn't work at all. Over the 6 old DOD pedals I've owned, this is the only one to cause me such a footswitch trouble. The FX72 goes pretty cheap on Ebay, I think I'm gonna get a new one.

Hope that helped

I have both Flangers. My BF-2 is taiwanese. In my opinion, the main difference is how prominent the high frequency swoosh sound is. The FX72 is more subtle where the BF-2 is more prominent. I think the FX72 is more usable since it's more natural and subtle sounding, but you can get more extreme sounds from the BF-2. Between the two I like the FX72, but they're both good.

Check out this video on youtube:

There's a comparison of the two towards the middle. I think this guy uses the Talkbass forum too, but I can't remember his handle.

I've had Boss & DOD flangers & chorus; I prefer the CEB-3 over the DOD & the DOD flanger(I had a non-bass specific one but liked it)over the Boss. I like *subtle* over *extreme*, if that helps.
